Prince George, B.C – Wholesale Sports wants to come Prince George.

The plan is for a 30,000 square foot store, that will be the anchor for new commercial development on O’Grady, across from Canadian Tire and Home Depot.  it ewouldbe one of the largest stores in the Wholesale Sports chain.

The developer would like to have the Wholesale Sport store and a further 30,000 square feet for other commercial operations.

In making the application to Council,  Harry Backlin, speaking on behalf of the applicant, said he believes this is a sign of the strength of the economy here "This application shows me there is somebody  who has a hell of a lot of faith in this community.  We are not dying with the pine beetle."

At issue is the need to rezone the property from its current  parks and minor institutional to commercial. The other issue is traffic.

City Staff are requesting a traffic analysis that will satisfy administration. The analysis says yes, there will be some back ups at O’Grady, but only during peak afternoon time and only for a few moments.

Council has  unanimously supported the rezoning.

Well its long over due. We have been getting ripped off for a long time now.
Thankyou whole sale sports
I agree it's about time as well. I have had to resort to ordering my hunting equipment and clothing from Cabelas in the USA or SIR in Winnipeg. Once in a while taking a drive all the way up to Dawson Creek to Corelane Sporting goods. It'll be great to have a sporting good store in PG that is actually open on saturdays when a person is not working and one that has a variety of goods. Thanks Wholesale sports. I will be a regular in your store.
They can't get here fast enough for my liking.
Yup nothing like asking your favorite sporting goods store to get you the price and availability for a certain product. Leaving all the info regarding what you want including all your contact information with them and them never getting back to you about it.
Has happened on more than one occasion.
Cabelas and Wholesale Sports has seen a lot of my money over the years due to this kind of service. Not to mention pricing.

Welcome Wholesale Sports
Wow!!!!!!!!!!
It will be awfully nice to have them here. We were in Kamloops over the weekend, and that is one of our regular stops. They have a great selection, and you can bet we topped off our tackle boxes.
Excellent idea!!! Lets get rid of some green space and put in another store!!

OK, it's true; "We are not dying with the pine beetle." The beetle's fine; it's just us who's dying.
LMAO, they are only trees zoop
One would think that with all of the stores locating in PG, the potential of this area must be very good, otherwise, why would they invest so much in our community? It encourages me that they are so positive of our future. Chester
Really all I figure it is is some turn over of retail as it migrates to where the future potential for action is. We don't have any new retail in PG just different actors that replaced the old actors in a new location.

I think the progress has been for the better with better value and selection for the customer... but unfortunately unionized work and the downtown have probably bared the brunt of this transition. The downtown because it can not meet the convenience needs of an automobile public with the downtown area located on a flood plain. And the unionized worker because the new retail model is built on low cost labor and cheep foreign import goods.

Great news, can hardly wait, nice that Prince George is finally attracting sone large stores
It is because they can get cheap labour from all the government, forestry, CNC workers, etc. who have been laid off over the years. Makes the losses from maybe a little bit less traffic bearable.

What the hell, we have allowed all the other big boxters to set up in PG, why not?
I think it is great how much of the shopping has been concentrated in that area, it means less congestion everywhere else. For me, I only have to enter the busy zone when I desire a product from one of the impersonal, understaffed, unknowledgeable big boxes, which is not often. I would much rather deal with a smaller, locally owned company where I MAY get the service and knowledge. At least there has been a modicum of planning permitted in THAT area of town, witness the hwy. underpass, nice touch. Anywhere else in town would have gotten a brand new traffic light. Whats a few trees, they only stand in the way of progress you know.
metalman.
The population in PG hasn't really grown since 1981. According to the BC Electorial Boundaries Commision Report Feb 14, 2008, PG has only grown by 3,422 people up to 2006.

So oviously PG is not that great a place to invest or live in. The up tick in massive retail potential does not increase the growth in PG either, but it does tap into the huge population growth in the regional district over the same time period. Real growth inside the city will come from the small investor because they are local and make incremental improvements that really add up. But small investors are afraid of city administration, and city council never steps up the plate to make any difference either. Cheap little mom & pop investments are easily picked apart and ground up by the city until they give up and fold.

The tiny population growth over the last 27 years is reflection of the low risk tolerance of the past city council more than anything else. Big box store have lots of money, and that is all that matters.
Welcome Wholesale Sports, glad to have ya!
Excellent sign of a diversifying economy - remember that these new stores do transfer in management from existing stores - that stimulates the local economy - its a win-win situation. I have lived here since 2001 and have seen a lot of progress in retail coming to town. Now if we can only get some restaurants that dont serve chinese food!! Welcome Tony Romas!!!
