DAWSON CREEK –More than 200 students have been honored at a Convocation exercise held in Dawson Creek during the Northern Lights College Convocation The ceremonies recognized graduates from the Dawson Creek, Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge campuses. Approximately 200 friends and family members attended the event, which was held at Unchagah Hall. Three valedictorians spoke to their fellow graduates about the experiences they shared in completing their education at NLC, as well as the challenges they face in the future. Margene Quinlan, an Applied Business Technology student in Dawson Creek, recalled being “a little more than terrified” when she decided to make the return to school, and was introduced to classmates ranging from “16 years to mature.” “But we all had made the decision to change our lives,” Quinlan said. “That is what we came to NLC for, the opportunity to change our lives… and perhaps change the lives of others around us.” Quinlan reflected on the various challenges faced by her classmates, including dealing with the cold winter climate, suffering losses in their personal lives, illness, raising a family, and holding down a part-time job. “Good for you, you have earned this moment,” Quinlan said. And Jaime Nickerson, an Applied Business Technology student in Tumbler Ridge, reminded everyone that there is no challenge that cannot be overcome. Graduates received diplomas or certificates in a number of programs, including: Adult Basic Education, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Applied Business Technology, Culinary Arts, Esthetics and Nail Care Technology, Licensed Practical Nurse, Job Education and Training, and Visual and Communication Arts. Northern Lights College holds three Convocation ceremonies each year. In addition to the Dawson Creek ceremony, there will be ceremonies in Fort St. John on June 6 and Fort Nelson on June 20.
