"The President of the Prince George Chamber of Commerce, Albert Koehler, says his group will now be getting in contact with other Chambers throughout the region to see if they can get a move by the provincial body reversed.

The Provincial body will take a motion to the annual meeting in Whistler May 22-25th. The motion is titled “Enhanced Log markets’.

The motion reads; that the provincial government:

1.     go beyond the recommendations of the Wright/Dumont report and permit log exports of all non-cedar species in regions that have an economically depressed forest industry;

2.     maintain minimum fee-in-lieu fees for at least 50% of the species exported and an increasingly graduated fee-in-lieu for timber exported above 50%, based on the surplus test currently being implemented; and;

3.     Encourage the liquidation of low-value stands and invest in silviculture to create and promote healthier and economically viable stands for the future.

Koehler says he became informed of the move when he read it on Opinion250. "I have printed the story and the comments off and now will be trying to contact all Chambers. I was quite surprised to read it and this is something that we would not support. We had a meeting of the Chamber this morning,"  he said, "and the position we are taking is completely different then the provincial body. We want see the industry go in a completely different direction."

Does the LEFT hand know what the RIGHT hand is doing. Obviously not.
Must have just came out of a comma
"Chamber of Secrets"... or maybe "Chamber of Confusion"...

:-)

All bloody cheap shots.

I like the refreshing attitude of telling it like it is, rather than going along with the crowd.

As usual, we are always swimming up stream.

As usual, some of the fish standing on the sidelines are cheering for the other fish in the eddies, rather than getting into deeper water and doing something progressive rather than flapping their gills!!!
"Must have just come out of a "period" of a COMA". Ask yer doctor.
Obviously different areas of the province have different needs. Maybe the BC coast loggers don't need to ship logs and the loggers in Cranbrook do?

The northern chapters of most BC associations just get dragged along with what the south needs done. I've ran into the occasion where the VanVic people forget that BC has a winter that has to be accommodated and worked around by anyone outside the delta area.
"We want see the industry go in a completely different direction"

I wonder what that direction would be. I wonder who they will consult as to what that direction should be.

I wonder how much the Chamber's opinion matters when it comes to forest industry practice?

Much ado about nothing?
The local Chambers of Commerce have been very busy in the past working to enhance the economies of the north. It is sometimes a thankless job of which they are all volunteers and must try to keep thier own business going, so some of the comments above are from people who just complain but have no solutions or unwilling to get involved and help make a difference.
Screech ....

Busy working to enhance .... that is input ...

So can you define an output of all this being busy? Cause and effect?

Thankless job of volunteering? That describes volunteering, period. I think it was said that PG has the highest or one of the highest volunteering rates in the province.

I suspect that many on this site volunteer. Most often that happens in areas where the main thing you get out is a good feeling of helping.

An addition to helping people individually, I volunteer with 7 formal organizations in town, most at a decision making level similar to a director of the Chamber.

I do not mean to slight the work of those on the Chamber Board for the work they do, but we must keep in mind that they are in business, and it is only natural for active business people to be active in promoting the well being of their business community so that their own business continues to thrive.

None of the organizations I am volunteer for are even indirectly related to the business I am in. However, every single one, in my opinion, will help to strengthen the economy and the social well being of this community I live in.

As with anything in this world, there are others who have different opinions about whether those things I advocate for will do what I and others think they will do. That is the nature of democracy and an open society.

Those who understand that will take that "push back" and include it in their decsion making process and ideally meet with the individuals and groups who provide considerable push back.

So, please do not make assumptions about those who post on here and why there might be push back.

There are two key thoughts expressed in the above statements. The main one follows along the line of one organization not knowing what the other is doing when one would think they should.

So, in your opinion, does provincial organization know what the regional organizations know? Do they care? Are they even associated with the regional Chambers? If they are, looks like in this case the provincial Chamber did not do their due diligence of good business practice. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then why would you blame outsiders for thinking that it is a duck?

The other notion is that the south typically does not care what the north or interior areas think. This is a notion that many of those living outside of the lower mainland generally agree with. Many of those who volunteer in this community agree with that either on some occasions or in general. So, how do you feel about that? Do you feel that we might have an uphill or upstream battle here on occasion that the lower mainland does not?
Hmmmm... good points Owl.

Over all the years I lived in PG, I worked thousands of hours with many other volunteers... and without any direct business "rewards or connections".

The "notion" of the south caring little about life or thought in the north is more of a "FACT" than a "notion".

Plunder is a one way passage.

Goodtimes :-)
Good ansewer Owl
C'mon owl...take a run at the mayors job!
Even if you didn't win,we would certianly have great fun on Opinion 250!
I think it would be fun to run for the Rhinoceros party. There are a few in town who want to resurrect that. Maybe a buinch of us on here should put a group of 8 together and job shadow the incumbents during the election.

We need to poke a bit of fun at the process here, and everywhere for that matter. Maybe that will bring everyone to their senses.
