CUPE B.C. President, Barry O'Neil, addresses crowd in front of Education Minister Shirley Bond's office

About 300 CUPE members and teachers turned out at a rally in front of Education Minister Shirley Bond's office during the lunch hour .

Barry O'Neil , President of CUPE, BC told the crowd "We are fighting for everything our parents gave their lives for."

O'Neil would not rule out a general strike in BC saying "It is a scary thought,, but the reality is the government needs to focus on resolving this issue what have they got to lose? They have to show leadership, because the people in this province don't understand why they cannot come to the table and negotiate. Let's get our kids back to school."

As a result of todays job action, there is no garbage collection and many city facilties are closed.

City management has been filling in the gaps.

Meantime, teachers will find out Friday just what Supreme Court Justice Brenda Brown thinks is fair punishment for the teachers continuing to defy the back to work order.  Both sides in the dispute appeared in court today, and the Judge  noted she will make her decision Friday.

Can someone please tell me why the city of P.G.would issue a permit(parade permit)so that these people can close off the street for their rally?Where are the carpenter unions and the steel worker unions?Has anyone noticed that all this so called support is coming from unions that are at the public trough. As taxpayers I feel we are being extorted.
Public sector workers are still citizens of this country and province, and do not lose their rights merely by virtue of working for the public. That means they are allowed to have political demonstrations just like anybody else. If you think only public sector unions are involved you are sorely mistaken, as proven absolutely on the steps of the legislature yesterday. Live with it.
Actually, there were many different unions represented, including some from the private sector. Steelworkers, IBEW, IWA, etc.
This whole mess is throwing this province, and our economic standing in North America and the rest of the world, back 25 years.

The teachers will get clubbed into submission, go back to work dragging their feet and their quivering bottom lips, and every public AND private union member will become an instant martyr.

Watch investment dollars leave this province faster than you can say (or spell, if you can) Free Market Economy...
Jethro, you are absolutely correct. This is not about anything other than unions trying to see if they are as strong as the government or the courts.
We have too many unions in this province that think they can tell people what to do. I hope each and every one of the people in the protest today loses their pay. I know if they were working for me, they would not get paid and they would get a letter of reprimand in their files.
Well let me tell you people that think you know it all. First, if you"re going to make a commit on this issue or any other issue, do your homework, get the facts. Instead of making complete asses of yourselves. Second, I'm a proud CUPE 399 member who was at the rally today. And no we did not get paid for today. Its not a strike its political protest, which anyone has the right to do. Its still a free country. And we're not trying to be a strong as the government. How would you feel if tomorrow the government came to your place of work and told all of you that starting today there will be no coffee breaks and no lunchs. If you're sick you still have too come into work and if you don't you'll be docked a whole weeks pay. And to top it all off, The new hours of work is changed to twelve hours instead of eight. At the some pay, no increase no overtime.

I could go on and on but I hope you see what I mean. Gordon Campbell is playing GOD. Are you going to let him or anyone push you around?
Is it not amazing that unionized workers can create so many horrendous problems in a province??
Of course B C is renowned for being in a constant upheaval over unions creating work stoppages.
A superintendent from Alberta told me last December that B C was at the beginning of a strong comeback, but if the N D P were elected we would become once again a "has been" province as the N D P allowed unions to run the country, and no investment dollars would come into the province if an investor was constantly plagued with threatening union workers striking and other union workers following with work stoppages in support.
Here today we have just that!!!!
The only remedy these idiots have to back up their stupid law breaking action is to bring up the mishap Campbell had last year.
Well, I would like to know what these "holier than thou arts" have done in their lifetime that gives them the God given right to condemn. A good many people in this city drink, and many heavily, and yet they get behind the wheel of a vehicle, but unfortunately they do not get caught for impaired.
Too damn bad.
Such purity should be rewarded now shouldn't it???
These teachers do not mind throwing around dirt on another person, but I have known a few teachers that are hardly the epitome of being the purest of the pure.
If I break the law, I am expected to pay the price.
Teachers break the law, and smile and wave at the public.
I, for one, do not smile and wave back.
I actually feel like giving them a rather rude sign.
They are such great examples to teach the young????
Not in my opinion.
Well folks, we finally find ourselves on the road to recovery in our great province. But, it seems we are going to make sure this Campbell government is not going to have an easy time of it.

It amazes me how the average hard working person has such a negative attitude towards his employer.

I was told one time in confidence that "The main role of a union was to undermine and erode the rights of his employer." I never forgot that line and my personal experiences with unions only reinforced that thinking. I hope it's not true and was an isolated incident with me and my union executive.

It's to bad that most hardworking people don't really understand economics, capitalism and business. According to the average labourer, corporations are greedy, government only gives tax breaks to the greedy corporations and a free enterprise government is the enemy of unionized labour.

This attitude does not foster a healthy work environment. Does it?

Bear with me for a moment while I revisit my understanding of business.

Where exactly does all of the money come from?

In it's most basic form, every business is in business to provide a product or service that someone is willing to pay for. That is why we need employees. The market requires it and it works. (Capitalism) Like it or not.

So, healthy businesses require profits but also require a stable, skilled, reliable work force to provide these products and services.

What happens if an employer can't rely on his employees to provide these products or services? Or, the community, province or country is no longer an attractive place to set up shop. (create jobs)

If you owned a business, what would you be thinking? Where would you want to invest your money?

As each employee trades their skills and labour for a paycheck, life improves for everyone. Money begins to flow through an employees bank account. They begin to purchase homes, cars, food, clothing etc. etc. Everything they purchase must also be provided by someone else, hence more jobs. By default, the government is the receipient of tax dollars from income, tax dollars from the sale of merchandise and tax from the ownership of property. This is where the government gets all of it's money.

When the economy is humming, everyone benefits. If any one of them stops the flow, everyone is effected.

So, let's back up one step. One of these key players decides he doesn't want to play anymore. Everything comes to a halt.

So, who wants to take responsibility for messing up our future. It's on the line. You decide where you want to put your support.

For me, I know what I need to do to keep the wheels turning. I need to keep working. What about you? Chester
Long winded Chester, but right on. You are not going to convert anyone though. They just look at Moa's Red book on the shelf and start muttering about workers rights, subversive elements, corporations and "rich" people, and fair wage and power to the people, and the next thing you know they are standing outside your door waving a pick-axe handle and screaming at the top of their lungs; and they don't even remember driving there. Talking to union thugs is like trying to reason with a woman when reason is not what they want to hear. Fun eh?
Try to imagine business people massing outside union offices waving signs & shrieking.
ROFL
As a strong trade unionist, I would just love to see that. Belly aching lol.
