Its been ten years since magnetic resonance imaging started at PGRH (with the old moblile imaging trailer shared with Kelowna and Kamloops) and now, the hospital has done scan  number 10,000.

Nothern Health  says  wait times for an MRI have dropped over the past couple of years since the permanent MRI unit was installed.  Now, in most cases, urgent scans can be performed within a day and elective scans can be be done within 4-6 weeks.

“The original mobile MRI unit was in Prince George for one out of every four weeks, which allowed us to provide scans for about 500 to 750 patients a year,” said Chief Operating Officer Michael McMillan. “We’re now conducting upwards of 2,000 scans a year with the permanent MRI."

The permanent MRI was installed in 2003 at a cost of $3.4 million. The costs were shared between the BC Ministry of Health ($2.065 million), Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation ($1 million), and Fraser Fort George Regional Hospital District ($377,000)
