Prince George, B.C. – Jymm Kennedy, President of PPWC Local 25, the union representing the 260 unionized employees of the North Central Plywood plant, says his work area at the site has been destroyed “My shop is a pile of rubble.”

He, along with the other employees who find themselves without work in the wake of a devastating fire are being asked to attend a meeting this morning at the Civic Centre.

The 10 a.m. meeting is for workers only, no spouses, so Canfor can bring employees up to speed on the fire which ripped through the mill Monday night, levelling the building.

While there have been some who have been suggesting the mill will be rebuilt because it was a profitable one, there are others who aren’t so certain because of the continued slump in the U.S. housing market.

Kennedy says there is some equipment which he thinks can be salvaged from the rubble like the precipitor and the de-barker.

Canfor spokesperson, Lee Coonfer says it will be at least a couple of weeks before the company makes a decision about the future plans for the mill.

Everybody cross their fingers, we need the plywood plant to be re-built. They are a major part of our local economy.
metalman.
Unfortunately, if it does get rebuilt. It likely will not be employing 260 people. Likely in the range of 150 people, and produce more. This caused by updating their technology.

Your right He speaks, unfortunately corporate greed dictates that less people getting paid to do a job means bigger bank accounts for the rich.
To hell with the people that have busted their butts building these companies into what they have become.
Canfor's last concern is the people.
