Prince George, B.C. - Northern Health is advising Prince George residents to avoid handling ash and residue from the North Central Plywood and Interior Warehousing fires.
Ash and debris from the fires drifted into many neighbourhoods in the city, and Northern Health says there are some things you should know:
- a number of creosote railway ties were involved in the fire, and the resulting ash likely contains creosote residues.
- Other chemical compounds that were stored at the affected sites could be potentially harmful. People should stay away from the fire scenes, and avoid handling residue from the fires.
- Any parts of the body that may have come into contact with ash and creosote residue should be thoroughly washed to avoid skin, mucus membrane or eye irritation.
- Food and/or drinking water that is potentially contaminated with creosote residue and ash should be discarded; ingestion could result in burns to the mucus membranes of the mouth and stomach.
- Adults and children who may have had contact with or handled creosote residue or ash should be careful to thoroughly wash their hands before handling or eating food.
- In the event of eye contact with the residue or ash, wash the affected eye water for at least 15 minutes.
If you may have been exposed to ash or residue from the recent industrial site fires and have experienced any health problems, contact your medical professional as soon as possible.
