Northern Medical Health Officer Dr. Lorna Medd packs some items for her trip to Uganda

Northern Medical Health Officer Dr. Lorna Medd, leaves Monday on an unpaid trip to Uganda.  She will be helping to teach rural mothers and families about basic health concerns.

Dr. Medd says the organization that set up this working time in Uganda, is basically a Pediatrician in Calgary and an International Health consultant.

Medd will travel to three rural health centers where, between now and December, she will teach the families in these communities health programs in an effort to try and reduce the number of infant and child deaths.

Dr. Medd says this is a shoe string operation, no one gets paid, "I’ve taken holidays and Northern Health has given me education leave. We are hoping to reduce the death rate in the small rural communities of Uganda by teaching them how to deal with diarrhea and basic diseases which are the leading killers of young children in that country."

The global mortality rate for children under 5 (U5MR) is 82/1000 live births. In industrialized countries, it is 7/1000. In Uganda it is 140/1000.

"We hope one day" she said "that our efforts will reduce the death rate in this emerging country."
