Prince George, B.C. – There's a new burbger franchse in Prince George.

Fatburger will be opening its doors in Westgate (next to  Canadian Tire and  Rocky Mountain Fitness)this morning at 10:30.

Fatburger is a licensed facility which features a sports bar style atmosphere including many television screens, a juke box and sports memorabilia.  

Despite the name, Fatburger offers 100% Alberta beef which is the leanest among any chain in Canada.  For those not in the mood for beef, Fatburger offers turkey burgers, chicken burgers, salads, onion rings and milkshakes.

Fatburger is locally owned.

nice, another restaurant opening in college heights. I dont understand why the city complains so much about the downtown, yet they dont force investors to build downtown. Just think if most of the stores up in college heights were built in the downtown area, we would have a half decent downtown. Stop building on the outsides and start putting money into the core.

"Forcing" investors to build downtown is not the answer. If someone told me that I had to locate downtown, I wouldn't do it. The downtown is a dump and there's a reason that these new businesses want no part of it.

Clean it up, make it less dangerous, and then maybe it might be more business friendly. I don't blame them one bit for not wanting to locate down there.
Fat Burger was actually developed in the 1960's when the term "phat" started to be used. As in "cool". They just spelt it wrong. Its apparently supposed to be like "Phat Burger". So not eat a whole bunch of burgers and gain some weight but eat a whole bunch of cool burgers.
If the city of Prince George wants a better downtown. Than the city of Prince George has to buy up the properties, decide what should go there, and build it. That is the only way it is going to happen.

Buy out the lots between Dominion and George Street, between Third and forth.
Bring in a big time developer and rebuild it with a fancy office tower and retail on the main. Than take on another block.

Before you know it, other developers will consolidate properties and start doing the same thing.

Stop the whinning and start the metamorphsis. don't waste the money fixing up the sidewalks downtown. do some real changes.

Ooooooooh as if we don't have yet another reason to see life in PG as a long episode of the Simpsons. We should change the name of Prince George to Springfield.
Before any sort of downtown redevelopment can be done, you need to solve the issue that for 3-4 months of the year the air is just not breathable. I don't mean when it gets to poor in the 2.5 index, there are many days downtown the index is fine but the air just makes you sick to breath it.

Sorry, culturevulch, but P. G. is a medium sized city that is still run by small town thinking, new burger joints are all we's agonna git. Any truth to the rumour that the new city limits exclude the downtown area? And that City Hall is moving up to Westgate, the street people won't find them there, the air is cleaner, and they will be closer to the foreign owned big box stores that they like so much. I understand that they won't be taking the potholes with them though.

Can't imagine Fatburger between a homeless shelter and a needle exchange and across the street from a pawnshop downtown. If those homeless wacko druggies ever get the wherewithal to commute to College Heights, it will be time to say adios to this gritty mill town once and for all.
I won't eat there much, however, it is a NEW business in town, it will employ people, it will pay taxes and it will provide another option for people looking for that type of establishment to eat at. It's also a nice looking business. What's the downside?

Oh and lunarbase is right IMHO. Nothing significant will change in the downtown core until the air improves. If the City truly wants to revitalize the area, they should start by attacking the problem and not the symptom. You need people to take ownership of the area and right now, people could care less. Get people living downtown and feeling connected to the downtown and it will change. There are a number of things that need done before that will occur though and clean air is numero uno in my eye.
Yes....and people wonder why $5.00 grey XL sweat pants and Boca tops are the prime dress wear in PG....
I tried to go there and eat but could not get through the door. It's not for fat people like me I guess. I wish it had a drive through.
The last highrise office building, built in Prince George was the Westel Building on 2nd and Victoria Sts. This was built approx 25 years ago. This should give you some indication that the City is not growing. All other new buildings (by private enterprise are just trade offs)

Cdn Tire from Downtown to College Heights.
The Brick to Highway 16 West.
The Credit Union from Parkwood to 16 West
etc; etc; etc;

Many business have closed or left town. The latest is the Saan Store on the Hart Highway.

The population has decreased in the last ten years. (What ever happened to the Mayors appeal of the latest census)

With the problems in the forest industry etc; there will be little or no growth in the area for the next 10 to 15 years.

The Mayer Terminal Container Port in Prince Rupert in conjunction with CN Rail, and Cosco. (Chinese Overseas Shipping Co.)
ship three trains per week to the Memphis Tenn., Chicago Ill area. This equates to approx 13,000 Containers per year. This means that since the Port opened in Oct. 2007 approx 8000 Containers have passed through Prince George with only a crew change, but no spin off benifits of any magnitude.

In addition the 20 million reload facility has loaded very few if any containers to Prince Rupert BC . This after being in business for 8 Months. The business they are doing is all going to Vancouver, and used to be handled by other warehouses in Prince George. In fact since it opened the reload facility has laid off 5 people.

The Prince George Airport Authority in its long term plan for the runway expansion states that they could be re-fueling 4 large body cargo jets per day by the year 2025, and are hoping to get some air cargo business. (Dont hold your breath on this one)

My point.....Status Quo or less for at least the next 10 years, so sit back and enjoy the ride. Avoid predictions of Developers, and Politicians, as they have a vested interest in keeping the hype going.

Of course to provide balance, you should also mention the new development that has come to PG in recent memory. Some examples include Home Depot, Walmart, Future Shop, Parkwood Place, greatly expanded automobile dealerships, an expanded restaurant sector, Abderdeen Glen golf course, Costco, numerous publically funded projects, etc.

It's not all bad and it's rather predictable that some stuff will close down while other stuff will pop up. That's the nature of change. I do believe that, overall, the Prince George of 2008 is a much nicer City than the Prince George of 1980, 1990 and 2000. There is still lots of improvement that can be made, but the trend is going in the right direction IMHO.

You beat me to the 'quebord wiley, but I would also mention, um, uh, well theres the, uh, hmm. I guess there ain't much....Gateway residence at Connaught, another proposed mega car lot (of course it will consolidate N.L. Dodge and Nissan)
The new Duchess park/KG the fifth, did anyone mention the major expansion and ongoing reno's to PGRH, Parkwood mall in '97, the new cop shop. Oh well ,still a back water small town busting at the seams is PG.
