Prince George, B.C. – Crime is down 46% in the city according to first quarter 2008 police statistics.

Prince George RCMP Detachment Commander Superintendent Dahl Chambers says despite a report by Maclean’s Magazine earlier in the year calling the city one of the most dangerous in Canada, he says progress is being made. “We realized we had a spike in Criminal Activity… and we put a number of things in place to work on those factors.”
Chambers says their Crime Reduction Team, together with IMPACT’s Bait Car Program, have targeted what he calls the 5% of the people who commit over 50% of crimes in Prince George—be it aggravated assaults, sexual assaults, robberies, break and enters as well as those who steal vehicles.

There were questions on how the RCMP would continue to reduce crime in the city. “How do we follow in that trend and we see the same kind of trend coming forward?” said Councillor Sherry Sethen.
Superintendent Chambers defended his staff. “I’ve only had our Crime Reduction Analyst in place for a few Months. Our crime reduction team has only been up and fully staffed for the last year.” Chambers says they’ve “just put a Sergeant in charge of our crime reduction team to further rank enhance it.”

The stats focus on six types of crime, homicide, aggravated assault, sexual assault, robbery, break and enter, and vehicle theft.

When compared to the same period in 2007, the only category showing no change was homicide.

The Stats show a continued trend when comparing fiscal year to fiscal year, ( April first to March 31st):

Community Policing

The Prince George RCMP detachment will also participate in a pilot program that brings two new ‘community safety officers’ that will help implement Community Policing Programs to reduce crime.

“It’s an 18 month pilot program that hires two new members, with full peace officer status but do not carry firearms,” said Superintendent Dahl Chambers.  He says the program takes advantage of current funding and will not require any new money.

Chamber says Crime Reduction is a community effort, pointing to how recent grads of the BRAVE or—Drug Resistance and Violence and Education program as well as the DARE program—or Drug Abuse and Resistance Education program has on preventing crime by being proactive

Superintendent Chambers also spoke about targeting domestic violence.  "There are 1100 incidents each year."  Although there are support programs for victims of this crime, there are not a lot of programs for offenders.  We have partnered with the John Howard Society, not because it is about being soft but because this is the avenue we need to take to get those who abuse their partners the help they need and break the cycle of abuse."

In addition to the decrease in the six categories above, there has also been a 17% reduction in crashes (particularly at the Domano intersection), and 98% compliance of seatbelts.

There was also an anonymous donation of $10,000 to the Con Air Program.

They have a "Crime Reduction Analyst" and theyve "just put a Sergeant in charge of our crime reduction team to further rank enhance it." which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and safe.

Maybe crime stats are down because we've all realized just how useless the RCMP are and haven't bothered to report any crimes. I know I sure as hell won't waste my time calling those donut swilling lard asses again.
I can't let this one go without making a comment. What about all the drug dealers, KNOWN TO POLICE? the crack houses, where most of the criminals are hiding, that are KNOWN TO POLICE?
An analyst can make any stats look good, but this time they didn't the stats are still terrible and what makes me sick is they are proud of this. I feel warm and fuzzy too Zoopdingle, but its from all the butt wipe they are stringing us with.
I like the comment in your last sentence. Ditto.
If you think the RCMP are useless, try going a week without them.
When the RCMP say "it is under investigation", that means they don't know anything.
One homicide a year for two years in a row in a town of 75,000 or so. This is quite a violent city I must say.

Having said that, it seems that I can recall more than that, but must be mistaken.

Love to try it for 1 week.
Crime is down? Ya right.
Go ahead then Lostfaith, Move to India or some other country where to cops do nothing other than take bribes and laugh at you if you need help. Get a brain son, and respect the job the cops do. Better yet, go be a cop....buddy ol' pal.
How come all these SOB's that are "known to Police" never have a name? When the cops were called recently about a couple guys casing the neighbors house and back yard at 3:00 am they never bothered to attend but told the caller " yea we know who they are". Maybe if the general public "knew who they are" perhaps some 'peer pressure' might discourage them from ripping off anyone they want with little if any repercussion.

I know I'm reallllly fricken tired of hearing that perp were "known to police" and they are still cruising the town.

Crime down 46 % Gimme a break! Either the cops are BS'ing us or they should be truly embarrassed that it was 46% higher last year!
Oh and about the seatbelt compliance 98%.....that's a real cash cow and easy money for the boys in blue to make. If they spent the same amount of time and made a reasonable effort to fight actual crime the REAL CRIME STATS might really be what they trying to get us to believe today.

Crime is down in PG? BS.....maybe the RCMP are not reporting everything...Like the 3 gunshots that WERE fired in the Ewert street area a few days back! Maybe they did not happen at the grow op but several of us heard the shots....what else do they hide?
Crime isnt down in PG. Note that the statistics for 2008 are only less than one half way through the year! Yet double those statististics and they exceed the 2007 totals. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm Chambers pulling the wool over our eyes??? Time to move Mr. Chambers!!! Maybe the rcmp can find another spot for you where you can be effective.
Or should I say where the members will want to work hard for you instead of being bullied around and treated like s**t.
