Prince George, B.C. -  Prince George Fire Rescue crews from 3 halls responded to the report of a structure fire at Canfor’s Rustad Saw Mill on Pacific Way in the BCR site earlier today.

John Lane, Deputy Fire Chief states that everything is low key. “We arrived with three engines but only one remains on site. We had to observe for awhile as we didn’t want to put water on it right away in case the steel buckled. One engine remains along with Canfor experts to cool the furnace as safely as possible.”

It was determined that an oil leak had occurred inside one of the three large furnaces used to burn sawdust to heat their drying kilns. The fire had already been extinguished, and a portion of the furnace was glowing red hot.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

Interesting development...the plot thickens??
What plot? It was just a fire.
Just a fire? How often do fires happen at Canfor? By recent events one would think on a regular basis. Either Canfor is really unlucky or something more sinister is afoot.
They can't possibly have fire insurance, could they? That would be the only way to believe anything is suspicious here.
Fires don't happen very often in sawmills. To accuse a company of willfully destroying its own property seems pretty paranoid, especially when they were cash positive last month, for the first time in months.
Of course they have fire insurance.
Not to mention a fire investigator will be able to determine if it was set intentionally thereby losing any insurance payment.

It is this paragraph that caused my curiousity! Not paranoia, just raised eyebrows. Someone posted once that safety wasn't always a key issue and sawdust was not always swept away in an effort of fire prevention. For a fire crew to sit back and observe?? Not wanting to put water on it because the steel would buckle??? Must be VERY VERY hot then...and does that quote about Canfor experts mean they are advising the chief? Just a question. Kinda like the RUMOR about NCP how the canfor fire crew was ordered off the roof and there was a time gap that hoses were not on the fire allowing it to take off and get away on the fire crews. So, yes, I am curious. And yes I ask the question :)
In OH&S you are told that there is no such thing as an "accident" as all are preventable...so the safety experts say. So, this inquiring mind wants to know.
Honestly you people, even if the whole furnace building, seperate from the the rest of the mill buildings went up. It would not inhibit their ability to saw logs or plane the dried lumber left in stock. If Canfor wants to shut down a mill they'll do it when they're damn good and ready and lay the workers off at Christmas. You want conspiracy? Let's talk JFK, Area 51, Steven Harper getting into offic and the explosion of the pine beetle epidemic.
Burgerluver.
I don't think Scully and Mulder would touch this conspiracy
Steven Harper getting into "office"? That's not a mystery, he got more votes than the thieving liberals and the socialist party(NDP).
They do seem to have a lot of fires don't they.......and then there are all the little ones that don't make the news because they are so common. Does seem a little irresponsible considering how many lives could be endangered as well as the number of people who depend upon them for their livihood.
Sawdust, machinery, bearings, welding maintenance, dryers, heat, sparks, dust, wood, glues, etc. etc. Comon folks, don't you think fire is always a risk in this environment? Chester
Of course Chester...but I think we are more than a little concerned after the loss of NCP to risk another fire getting away. Our communities and Canfor employees can't afford anymore tragedies! I hope extra precautions are taken and upheld to minimize the risk. Fires should be the exception not a "normal risk" of doing business.
God Bless Harper.....to hell with Canfor
Fire happen in samills a lot more than most people realize.Clean up is a cost that canfor and most other companies do not like spend money on.During the summer the wood is drier and breaks up.Small dry pieces laying against moving parts. TaDa Friction fires
I would challange any sawmill to bring me in as I have 20 year of fixing these problems.90% of the time the bosses have no clue of what is lurking in the dark corners of there mills as long as they get there production numbers. Then they say how did that happen. Many of these bosses I have worked for and they know what i am saying.
Smells like some more financial combustion?
The funny thing is that this fire is rumored to have started early in the AM and was burning most of the day. My question is why did they wait so long to call for help from the Fire Department were the Rustad employees a little afraid for what may happen with involving the City after what happened at NCP?
volunteer FF.....

That rumor is absolutely not true, the fire was NOT burning most of the day, nor did it start in the am.
