So it is now official July 11 the new 3g iphone hits Rogers. The 3g will not do much for the phone call but will allow for faster data speeds unseen yet in Canada.

Steve Jobs unveiled the phone in San Francisco. July 11 is a big day for the company as the iphone hits the shelves in 22 countries the same day. Including Canada with Rogers and Fido. Steve Jobs hopes to have the iphone in 70 countries by year end.

The new phone is thought to include a lot more third party applications unlike the iphones of the past. Also included is a new “app server” where users can add apps for sports, travel and many other points of interest. It also works on WiFi connections so it can browse the net almost anywhere. With push email and sync with Microsoft exchange server.

In Canada especially Apple faces sharp competition from Blackberry. So it is introducing the new iphone with an eye to the business user.

In the United States this 16gb model is expected to go for at least $299 so I expect the Canadian one will be even more expensive. I have to wonder though how I would feel if I brought one of these a year ago in the States when the first came out without the 3g. now a better one comes out even cheaper which in the world of technology is common place. But considering they dropped the price just after they first came out, I have to wonder how this will play.

Rogers has confirmed that a new data price plan will also be introduced when this comes out but it is unclear yet if this plan will be available with the other Rogers smart phones like the blackberry. Given that data plans in Canada are some of the most expensive in the world I think the wifi is going to be well used. Especially in the beginning days when everyone is trying out their new toy. Count on some very high cell phone bills.

BIG DEAL.
Rodgers will never get my business again as their service really sucks big time.
As soon as your out of the bowl you lose cell coverage.Useing smoke signals would probley work better than what they provide for cell coverage.
I hope you got paid for this ad.
That's true Wrinkledawg...I made the mistake of buying one and won't be doing it again!
Is 3G available in PG?
Stummy read news flash again.

Cheers
I have Rogers and Telus contracts. To change the terms of the contract with Rogers , I had to renew for 3 years. To change with Telus the first 2 revisons are free than a $10.00 charge after that with no contract extension neccessary
I have Bell and Telus contracts. Recently I needed to get out of a Bell contract; $400.00 cancellation fee, and we were almost 14 months into a 36 month contract. Thanks to a helpful 'customer service technician' I learned of an alternative. I was able to get the phone transferred into anothers' name, after a credit check was done on the other party. I have not had good luck with Rogers, others like what passes for their service. I too have issues with Telus, but overall, they have given the best service, even if their signal coverage is not what they purport it to be.
metalman.
The thing that attracts most people to cell phone use is the "sticker price" listed on the ads. Sort of like bugs attracted to a light - both of those things will kill.

Best thing to do is some research on which phone will do what you want, use a couple internet search engines with user reviews from people who have the phone. Then go and buy the phone outright, without a contract.

I suggest a phone that will use the GSM network (Rogers in Canada), as this is a phone that can be used cheaply outside of our little continent (ie: when you go on vacation to Mexico or Hawaii...). These phones use a SIM card. With a little skill, most of the popular phones can be "unlocked", that is, be used on other networks than Rogers. While traveling, at most airports you land at, go to one of the cell stores, and buy a SIM card for that country, usually they come with about $10.00 loaded on them. Take out your Rogers card, and insert the card you've bought. Presto, cheap local calling, no roaming fees, and generally cheap long distance.

I've had my share of cell phones over the years, and am now content with my Apple iphone. Bought in the US, unlocked for free with a program downloaded (freely available on the internet), and with a Rogers month-to-month contract. I've used it in my travels abroad, doing exactly as I've written above, and have never been sadly surprised with a huge bill. I pay a month-to-month data (500 MB) usage fee to Rogers, along with the phone use, with unlimited long distance to MY5 people in Canada, text messaging up the yingyang, for which the complete cost is just over $100.00/month. Thats everything, taxes, usage fee, whatever - all in.

And no, 3G won't be available in many areas of Canada (or even the US) outside of the larger cities we know and love. So I won't be buying a new iphone, and if you're really wanting one, go on ebay and buy one from the US, there's lots of people who want to sell their's, to buy the new one coming out on July 11. That one will leave you really tied to that Rogers network here in Canada, and all the other countries its being sold in, as the marketing strategy now has been changed so that you are locked in to the cell provider. Unfortunate, but Apple has realized that this is how they can make more money with their iphone.

Sorry for getting a little word-y. I'll shut up now.
Those damn cancellation fees are a scam and should be illegal!
And metalman is right,Telus really does need to work on their signal coverage, but other than that,I am reasonably satisfied.
Is anyone satisfied with Bell's coverage?
