The Campbell government is losing another member.
Rick Thorpe, the MLA for Okanagan-Penticton has announced he will not seek re-election in the election next May.
"Rick Thorpe has made enormous contributions to the entire province and is a relentless advocate for small business and the taxpayers of the province,” said Premier Campbell. “He has been a tireless voice in support of the Okanagan. All of us recognize his drive and his energy. I am personally grateful for his support and for Yasmin’s understanding and selflessness."
“As a heart survivor, I was taught but did not always heed the advice ‘to listen to your body’. Today apparently my hearing has improved, and the time has come for me to say thank you for the opportunity to serve,” said Thorpe. “I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve the public, and it has been a privilege to serve three terms as an MLA and as a Minister.”
“Accordingly, I will not seek re-election on May 12, 2009,” confirmed Thorpe. “But rest assured I will do whatever I can do and work as hard as I can to see Gordon Campbell and our team re-elected to ensure British Columbia’s prosperity continues for another four years.”
“Mr. Premier, it has been a pleasure to serve under your exceptional vision and leadership - thanks for your friendship Gord and the opportunity to be part of the team,” concluded Thorpe. “Most importantly to me has been the opportunity to serve my constituents. I am truly thankful for the opportunity the voters of Okanagan-Penticton and Okanagan-Westside have given me and I remain committed to working with and for all my constituents up to the 2009 election.”
