Teacher Strike May Generate Interest in Trustees Forum
By 250 News
Parents and Students should know by late Sunday evening whether classes will be resuming Monday morning, as that's when the B.C. Teachers Federation is expected to release results of a province-wide vote on mediator Vince Ready's report (click here, for background story).
One way or another, the teachers' illegal strike is expected to draw attention to next month's election of a new board of trustees for School District 57.
In the week leading up to the nomination deadline, there had just been five hats in the ring for the seven positions on the board, but a total of 11 candidates are now in the November 19th race (for a complete list, click here).
The Chair of the District Parents Advisory Council, Jim Yurkowski, says an all-candidates forum is scheduled for Wednesday, November 9th at 7pm at the Prince George Playhouse and he's encouraging the public to come out and participate. Yurkowski says there won't be any set list of questions handed to the candidates, rather the questions will come from those in attendance.
"We believe if a candidate feels they're worthy of being a trustee that they should know the issues and understand the issues, having said that, a question sheet is of no use."
Yurkowski says "knowing the issues is very, very important."
