Prince George, B.C. – UNBC has hit another milestone, and this one is in cold cash.

The University received $17.4 million dollars in research funding for the ’07-’08 year and that means it has topped the $100 million in research funding since the University’s inception in 1992 ( the year the faculty was hired although full operations didn’t start until 1994).

“This is a significant accomplishment for a young and small university; a success that is perhaps unique in the history of Canadian universities,” says Jim Randall, Acting UNBC President. “Ultimately, our talented faculty and students are the reasons we have achieved this milestone and among the greatest beneficiaries of their work are the communities of the region.”

There were 260 investments in research projects in 2007-08, worth a total of 17.4 million. This is second to UNBC’s record year of 2005-06, when the University attracted $18.8 million for 268 awards.

Well that explains how they can afford to pay people for quitting their jobs there.
Actually research funding can not be used for that purpose.
Good to see the University is still getting this research funding. That is one of the objectives of the original founders - not just an undergraduate university but a research university. That vision has been met and I hope it continues to be met.

While it is very true that the money cannot be used for other purposes, it does allow the number of instructional staff to remain higher than without the research component and also assists the university to keep more up to date with equipment.

Without the research grants, it would be a lesser quality university for many reason including quality of staff as well as quality of equipment and space.
Money just go as far as it used to.
