Minister of Forests and Range, Pat Bell, points out the fire ratings for areas in the Prince George Fire Centre
Prince George, B.C. – The new Minister of Forests and Range, Pat Bell, is concerned the fire hazard in B.C. forests this weekend could go from low to extreme “ You all know there is a lot of fuel there, and the temperatures are supposed to be in the high twenties and low 30’s over the weekend. It is really important that we all be very careful, and in the event a fire does start, that we report it right away.”
With so much of the forest in the Prince George Fire Centre dead pine from the mountain pine beetle attacks, the concern is the start of a fire that will race through those dead stands and threaten communities.
Bell urges everyone to keep their eyes open “No matter where you are this weekend, if you spot a forest fire, call it in. So many of us have cell phones, or satellite phones now that it really helps to have that information called in right away. That way it can be dealt with as quickly as possible.”
You can dial *5555 on your cell, or the 1-800-663-5555 .
Currently the fire danger ratings in the Prince George Fire Centre range from high ( in the Fort St. John and Fort Nelson regions) to very low in the Prince George area, but, warm temps and a wind can make that very low move up the scale very fast.
The cool wet spring has already seen 114 fires in the region of which 40 were caused by lightning, 7 were caused by campfires and the balance the direct result of human behaviour.
There are no fire bans in the region for the weekend, but that too could change if the predicted hot dry conditions increase the risk of fire.
