Prince George, B.C. -  As  summer gets into full swing, RCMP are sending out notice they will have plenty of drinking and driving Counter Attack enhanced enforcement running July 1 to 31.

“We don’t want to hear any excuses—our streets need to be safe so everyone can have a safe and enjoyable summer,” said Cst Dave Babineau, spokes person for the RCMP Traffic Services in British Columbia. “Our Counter Attack enhanced enforcement road checks will be out in full force from July 1 to 31.”

Police enforcement occurs year-round, with increased road checks during July and again during the Christmas season.

In 1977, there were more than 300 fatalities from alcohol-related collisions (1976 — the year prior to Counter Attack starting). On average, 3,170 people are injured and 116 are killed in 4,980 alcohol-related crashes each year (average annual figures from 2002-2006 police data).

Police advise that if alcohol is part of your summer activities, plan ahead for a safe ride home.
• Arrange for a designated driver, use transit, take a taxi, or call a friend or family member for a ride.
• Never get in a vehicle with an impaired driver.
• There is no quick way to sober up. Contrary to popular belief food, coffee, cold showers or exercise will not speed up the elimination of alcohol from your system. The only thing that reduces the effects of alcohol is time.
• You’re safest if you completely separate driving from drinking.
