Prince George, B.C. – Whether it was patriotism or the 30 degree temperature, thousands flocked to celebrate Canada Day at Fort George Park today.
By 12:00pm, opening ceremonies were merely a formality as the park was already full of people excited to enjoy the entertainment and participate in many of the activities around the park..
Opening ceremonies began with Minister of Forest and Range, Pat Bell, Minister of Education, Shirley Bond, MP, Jay Hill and Mayor Colin Kinsley each wishing Canada a Happy Birthday.
The 2008 Cowichan Spirit Pole, was then introduced by Elders and dancers welcoming people to carve. The Spirit Pole celebrates its 62nd day of the 95 day tour around the Province.

The pole has currently had 8500 people from around the Province participate in the carving.
Entertainment such as jazz bands and a variety of dancers were showcased at the Band Shell, while a number of booths created a fairway throughout the park.
Booths included everything from vendors selling Canada Day souvenirs, clothes, and Native arts to information booths and kids activities such as face and body painting, arts and crafts and balloon giveaways.
Food booths seemed as if they could not keep up with the demand as lineups bent around corners to enjoy German, Greek, Ukrainian, Chinese, Jamaican, Banok, and ice-cream.
Festivities will continue at Fort George Park until 7:00pm.
Fireworks will begin at 11:00pm at Exhibition Park.

Recycling boxes were placed everywhere and many people throwing out the recyclables into the garbage - and many plastic cups thrown away too. Landfill will be much fuller just from this one event. Sad to see. Hope Canada gets it together soon.
Happy Canada Day too!
