Prince George, B.C. – Whether it was patriotism or the 30 degree temperature, thousands flocked to celebrate Canada Day at Fort George Park today.

By 12:00pm, opening ceremonies were merely a formality as the park was already full of people excited to enjoy the entertainment and participate in many of the activities around the park..

Opening ceremonies began with Minister of Forest and Range, Pat Bell, Minister of Education, Shirley Bond, MP, Jay Hill and Mayor Colin Kinsley each wishing Canada a Happy Birthday.

The 2008 Cowichan Spirit Pole, was then introduced by Elders and dancers welcoming people to carve. The Spirit Pole celebrates its 62nd day of the 95 day tour around the Province.

The pole has currently had 8500 people from around the Province participate in the carving.

Entertainment such as jazz bands and a variety of dancers were showcased at the Band Shell, while a number of booths created a fairway throughout the park.

Booths included everything from vendors selling Canada Day souvenirs, clothes, and Native arts to information booths and kids activities such as face and body painting, arts and crafts and balloon giveaways.

Food booths seemed as if they could not keep up with the demand as lineups bent around corners to enjoy German, Greek, Ukrainian, Chinese, Jamaican, Banok, and  ice-cream.

Festivities will continue at Fort George Park until 7:00pm.

Fireworks will begin at 11:00pm at Exhibition Park.

what is with all the garbage at this event?
Recycling boxes were placed everywhere and many people throwing out the recyclables into the garbage - and many plastic cups thrown away too. Landfill will be much fuller just from this one event. Sad to see. Hope Canada gets it together soon.
Happy Canada Day too!
It's mainly because people are lazy and can't be bothered to spend the extra few minutes to put the recyclables in the right container.
Happy carbon tax day folks, You are all getting dupped!
seamutt, are you doing your part to in dupping the rest of us folks. I'll bet you are. Let me explain:

You're probably not recycling paper, so costs to dispose are borne by the rest of us.

You're probably not recycling plastics, ie: milk jugs, 2L coke bottles, etc - so the cost to dispose are borne by the rest of us.

You're probably not recycling metal, ie: coke cans, pet food containers, tomato juice cans, etc - so the costs to dispose are borne by the rest of us.

You're probably not sending drywall waste (I think you've built your own house like a lot of people in PG) for recycling, so the costs to dispose are borne by the rest of us.

You've probably sent wood waste (when you were building your house) to the landfill, rather than recycling it, so the costs to dispose are borne by the rest of us.

And you're probably drinking your water out of bottles, rather than a tap, and not recycling, so the costs to dispose of the bottles are borne by rest of us.

So, thanks, seamutt, for your part in causing an environmental nightmare, the likes of which PG and the rest of Canada has never seen before. So now we're going to clean up your mess, but because we all have jobs, and can't spend the time to do that, we'll pay our government employees to do that for us (ie: a tax is just money we pay them to work for us, doing the things we can't or won't do).

I expect you're going to change your ways, now that I've enlightened you? The chickens have come home to roost, we're now going to pay for our excesses of years/decades gone by...
