Quesnel, B.C. - Two men from Whitehorse are in custody in Quesnel following an incident that started on Highway 97 around 1:20 this afternoon.
RCMP say the North Cariboo Traffic Unit pulled over a Ford F350 pick up carrying an ATV for speeding about a mile north of the Quesnel Airport.
Initially, the vehicle pulled over, but when the officer got out of his cruiser, the truck took off. Police say the officer engaged his emergency lights to pursue the truck but opted instead to turn off the lights, and attempted to observe the truck.
According to police, the truck entered the city of Quesnel and when the driver spotted another police cruiser, took off again.
A third police vehicle headed to Anderson Drive where an officer set up a spike belt. The driver of the truck spotted the belt and evaded it, turned and headed back into downtown Quesnel. The truck then circled back to Anderson Drive crossed the Fraser River into West Quesnel where it nearly hit another police vehicle at the end of the Moffat Bridge.
The truck then collided with a Grand Am that was turning on to Anderson Drive from Lewis Drive. The truck flipped several times before clipping a power pole and finally coming to a stop. The driver and passenger in the truck suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. The female driver of the Grand Am also suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.
Police say the men in the truck are aged 25 and 28 and both are from Whitehorse.
RCMP say at no time did they engage in a pursuit of the suspect vehicle. The incident is being investigated by the Quesnel detachment, the North Cariboo Traffic Unit and the North District Traffic Unit.
