Prince George, B.C. - RCMP have now released the names of the three young people who died July 5th  when the car they wer in cross the centre line of Highway 16 and crashed head on with a pick up truck.

At 10:43 PM, members of the Fraser Fort George Traffic Services, Integrated Road Safety Unit and Prince George City Detachment, responded to a two vehicle fatal head on collision on Highway 16 West, near West Beaverly Road.

The investigation has determined that an east bound Honda car, crossed the center line and collided with a west bound Ford F-350 pickup truck. Within seconds of the collision, a medical doctor was on the scene and tended to the victims. All three occupants of the car, were pronounced dead at the scene. They are:

Brody MATHEWS, 17 years old, from Burns Lake, BC - Brody graduated from Lakes District Secondary School this past spring.

Torrence WIEBE, 18 years old, from Burns Lake, BC - Torrence graduated from Lakes District Secondary School this past spring.

Tamara CHARLIE, 19 years old, from Burns Lake, BC - Tamara had completed her second year at UNBC in the Bachelor of Health Sciences, Biomedical Studies program.

The collision occurred after dark on an unlit section of highway and it is believed that it was raining at the time.

RCMP and the BC Coroners Service continue to investigate this collision. Several witness statements have been taken and the scene analyzed. Erratic driving and alcohol are factors in the cause of this collision. Two of the three occupants of the Honda were not wearing seatbelts, and were ejected upon impact. Autopsy examinations and toxicology tests will be performed later this week.

"There are four main contributors to deaths on our highways, aggressive driving, speed, failing to wear a seatbelt and alcohol. All four were involved in this collision" - Cst. Craig Douglass

The driver and lone occupant of the pickup, was transported to Prince George Regional Hospital, with undetermined, non life-threatening injuries. The pick-up he was driving rolled over after the collision. Charges are not being considered for the driver of the pick-up.

The flags at the University are at half mast in recognition of Tamara. Condolences to all involved, friends, family and the community in general.
My heart is aching for the poor guy in the Ford pickup. Wrong place, wrong time, and he has to live with that memory his entire life. Nobody wins when people drink and drive. Very sad for everyone involved.
