Water and Sewer Rates Going Up

Monday, December 5, 2011 @ 7:01 PM
Prince George, B.C. – Your  Sewer and water rates are going up.

The new Mayor and Council have voted to boost the rates by 5%.

In the case of both water and sewer, this increase will  not achieve full sustainability of  either utility however, it is enough to contribute to the capital rserve each year and maintain an operating surplus of 25% each year.

Here is how the increase will impact your bill:

WATER:

SEWER:

In a vote that  was an old- new split, the new Councillors, Frank Everitt, Lyn Hall and Albert Koehler oppposed the increase while the Mayor, Councillors Cameron Stolz, Murry Krause, Brian Skakun, DaveWilbur and Garth Frizzell voted in favour of the increase.

Big surprise , new leaders , same story , take more money . Just once I would like to see a politician that actually gives something back instead of takes more. this country is heading for a revolution fast .

I like how the new councilors said no to the increase, but too much of the old is still on council

That’s exactly why I sold my house in PG and moved. Absoutely greed and I refuse to pay it any longer. The tax is a big ripoff too. Pay and pay for nothing. And the garbage pickup service is just extortion, like the mob forcing you to use thier collection services. I don’t need my garbage to be picked up weekly. I can not generate that much garbage. Bye shari.
I aint givin’ no more money to U.

I sold my house in PG and moved out off City Limits. Was tired of being treated that unfair.
I lived by myself in my house, across the road there were all new huge mansions with many illegal suites and 10 or more living in these houses.
I had to pay the same amount for water and sewer they had to.
So maybe City of PG should think about it to install meters, that would be much fairer. Everybody pays for what ever they use. Then many house owners would think twice, if they will water the lawn with drinking water for hours.
We pay hydro or gas, but they charge us exactly for what we use. So if City wants us to pay for water, then please make it acceptable for everybody.
If somebody likes using much, they probably don’t mind paying much, but if somebody uses only a little, so please let them pay only a little.

Ha, the people who moved out of town actually believe they’re saving money.

Water meters–at what installation cost? Will we ever catch up? asinine idea. Install them in the new houses and leave the old ones alone.
Put them in commercial bldgs. Laundromats need one.

well, it was proposed to be 15% a year so 5% is more resonable.

Look at the bottom line, the capital contribution. It more than doubles over the 5 year period. That will come from borrowing or immediate payment, which means increased taxes or developing another revenue stream.

Maybe, as in the USA, we can ask the province to give cities the authority to institute city sales taxes.

Again, we are not the only city in this country in this situation. The feds throw money at infrastructure replacement every now and then. So, maybe we will get an opportunity to grab some off a low hanging branch one of these days.

I’d like to see higher sewer and water taxes on the outlying subdivisions. Tax the sprawl – they use far more meters of pipe per home than more dense areas in the bowl.

JohnnyBelt – Ha, the people who moved out of town actually believe they’re saving money.
– You are wrong, I did not only move to save money. I just do not like to be told, pay for this, we need more, pay for garbage I do not need, pay more for water, we need money.
I do not like it at all having greedy fingers in my wallet all the time, maybe you do or maybe you do not care to be told how to spend your money – but I do.
supertech – Water meters–at what installation cost – / Do you not pay a monthly fee for the hydro meter or gas meter?
They can do the same with the water meter, but at least at the end of the month you know that you only pay for the usage. In my opinion it is more than unfair, that a single person has to pay the same for water than a house with 10 or more people living in.

If you think that is unfair, just think how unfair it is if you do not have children, yet you have to pay taxes to the school district.

Life is unfair. We all make choices whether to accept it as one of the facts of life, or whether we try to get out of committments asked to be made when living in a community.

Everyone has their own little victories and defeats in “fighting” the system we were born under. Everyone has their own way of determining which is which. That too is part of the facts of life in this country.

Just remember, everyone who pays taxes in this city pays to maintain roads in the areas outside of the city both through a portion that goes to the regional district and other taxes that are collected which go to the province for maintaining provincial roads.

Only those of us who get to pay property taxes in PG pay for the majority of the roads and road maintenance here.

Yet, we are so generous that we have not yet installed license plate readers which will send an annual bill to your post box based on the frequency of your car going into and out of the city.

Your use of our streets is on us. Just make sure you buy something when you get here so that our businesses can continue to pay thier municipal taxes. ;-)

I think the lords of old had it right. Build a wall and a moat surrounding your “city” and lower the drawbridge only for those who are citizens. LOL

I have no problem, to pay my hydro bill, for they charge me what I use.
I would have a problem, if Hydro would take the meter away and tells me I have to pay for example 100 $ a month like every other house in the road.
We are supposed to go green, so a meter is the best way to reduce the use of energy, water etc.
And by the way, I was not in town for the last 3 weeks and I do not feel like going there soon. No need to.
And I pay also for snow removal for our roads and maybe somebody out of PG is driving here as well.
We are all grown ups and make our decisions to have a good life. I like the way I live, free, clean water, fresh air, wild life around me. And as a bonus low taxes.

JohnnyBelt you speak the truth those people living out in the boonies think they are saving money…….yeah right. How’s that gas bill for driving back and forth to your house every time you needs something from town? With gas at 123.9 it doesn’t take long to pay the same as someone living in town paying PG taxes.

For example, let’s say your saving $1,000 per year vs the City Slicker. OK, divide by 52 weeks gives you about 20 bucks a week. Let’s say a trip into town and back costs $5 so if you do 4 trips a week there it is. Nothing saved.

I will live in town because I would rather be closer to all the things I need. This town is still cheap. Period.

to mwk – If you read properly you will see, i wrote, it is a nice bonus for me to have these low taxes while living out of town. So tax savings for me is about $ 1.500 per years, utilities saving is about $ 630 per year.
My main reason I moved out of town is the bad air, the smell, the stink.
And that I pay so much less on taxes and no utilities, is great for me and a bonus. YRB does a super great job cleaning the roads.
And why would I go 4 times a week to Prince George? Usually I go once or twice a month to town, sometimes I do not even go for a month, for I do not have to go.
So life is just great here in the country and I do not miss at all the city life.
Cheers
