Mayor Green ‘s Inaugural Address

Monday, December 5, 2011 @ 7:15 PM
New Mayor and Council
Prince George, B.C. – In her inaugural address, Mayor Shari Green thanked all who had put their names forward during the recent election, and thanked former Mayor Dan Rogers and former Councillors Don Bassermann and Debora Munoz for their years of service to the City.

She welcomed the new Council, and noted “ This is a very strong team ready to roll up its sleeves.”

She said success in this decade “belongs to those cities that are nimble, responsive and innovative. We live in  times of economic fragility and uncertainty and as such,  we must move forward in a manner that is disciplined in purpose and flexible in practice.”

During her campaign she talked about  attracting more families and business  "And to do that our City must strive to be more responsive to the needs  of business, education and social enterprise. To  that end, my first act as Mayor will be to establish  a select committee on business and this team will capitalize on  the expertise and experience of senior  business leaders who will provide support, advice  and recommendations to the City  ensuring we open our doors and create the proper conditions  that will allow enterprise to flourish and make our community strong."

She started the meeting with the promise that while her core review will be undertaken, it could well take 6 to 9 months before any items are acted upon. That means it will not take place before the new budget  deliberations  begin .  She  says employees of the City will be involved in the discussions and decisions, she says there will be clear communication through each step of the way, and "the actions at the conclusion are thoughtful and meaningful for improved, efficient, cost effective government."

"There are serious  questions to answer and all  implications need t be well understood before decisions are made.  My  committment to you is to ensure this process is done in a fair and transparent way and that we emerge as a stronger more  efficient organization."

Saying she and the new Council have heard  loud and clear that the proposed 7%  tax hike for 2012 is not acceptable, she said there will efficiences found  in the short term   “There will be tough choices made”.

“As your Mayor and Council,  we are committed to finding solutions that our community deserves  and  expects and will do so in the best interest of the City and  its residents."

She bought her way in bottom line, censor all ya want, it’s true

lol, it kinda looks like Skakun is photobombing.

Too many short people on Council. All but three are on the podium. It looks like there was not enough room for Frank on there …. :-)

The other way to look at it, of course, is that those on the podium are the old guard, those on the floor are the newcomers who also happened to vote against the increases for the utilities. Perhaps they wanted to discuss alternate ways of dealing with those increased costs before they voted.

Her first act will be to form a committee? I don’t know if that counts as an act.

What does “photobombing” mean?

@billposer – when you sneak into the background of someone else’s group photo.

google it

When she says a select committee on business, does she mean select city councillors or select business people in town??

“She bought her way in bottom line, censor all ya want, it’s true”

Sore loser or sour grapes? You decide.

Give her a chance. She’s the one who stopped the Vendetta concerning Brian Skakun and that is a positive, in my book.
Dan Rogers was in a position to stop that much earlier and he chose to follow Kinsley’s advice. It sent him packin’. Good on ya Dan. Good on ya Shari.

A select committee is one which investigates a matter, reports on its findings, typically with some recommendations, and is then disolved.

Recently there was a committee which did just that with respect to off leash dog parks. That is now disolved after it submitted its findings. It was just not called a select committee.

The term is typically used for a higher level of government, such as provincial or federal, although it is starting to be used at lower levels as well.

At higher levels of government it can be given considerably more power, such as the power to subpoena witnesses.

According to the PG Citizen Sheri Green on Feb 10, 2011 proposed the elimination of residential snow remove all.
On the evening of the election CBC Radio was reporting live from Sherri Greens election headquarters in Parkwood Mall. I ask myself who is funding this woman’s election campaign ? Where is the money coming from?
According to reporter Betsy Trumpener Dan McLaren is there. ( he being Commonwealth Mortgages owner who bought the PG Hotel and 30 days later the city bought it off him for $500,000 more than he paid leaving the city with a huge demolition bill due to asbestos) I guess he would be there to support her. Also Marshal Smith from the Haldi woman treatment center( keep in mind the money behind that is funded by whom ? ) thus we know that will pass even though the local residents are adamant they do not want it there.
As I said in the PG Citizen-all choices unacceptable.

I was quite upset to read in this morning’s Citizen that Ms. Green is going to get a select committee together. It was mentioned that she already had a few people in mind for this committee.

First of all, the article about this was on page 3 (small article). Given that there was a lot of talk about how Ms. Green came to be council, you would think this might be front page news. I guess it helps to have management at the Citizen on board with your group’s agenda.

Second, shouldn’t this select committee be made from anyone who wants to try for a spot on it. It just sounds to me, from the newspaper article, that she already has the committee pretty much made up. I think a few of us know who will be on it.

Whoops! Meant to write in paragraph 2 “…how Ms. Green came to be Mayor, …”

To that end, my first act as Mayor will be to establish a select committee on business .
—————————————–
How many layers of committee’s do we need to run the affairs of our City? The City n needs to get out of the business of trying to drive the economy and look after the affairs of th City. It is now trying to build up a reserve fund by a hefty increase in our utility costs.

What will this reserve be used for? Probably to replace the garbage trucks that appear not to have that much maintenance in the past. With proper maintenance those trucks should last much longer then six years.

I guess our only hope is that the new councilors will wake up those that have been asleep in past.
Cheers

Thanks Gus!

What I really meant is she has people already in mind for this select committee… I wonder who those people will be? The ones who paid for her campaign?

Photobombing,Random guy,That guy,I guess they`r all close to the same…

If I was gonna Photobomb or Random guy though,I`d pick a group of better looking people ….so I`d stick out more…get it???

she should have worn some color to stand out.Skrew Skakun, he was dressed just fine..she should have worn a color to “stand out” a bit
