Bell To Head Up Burns Lake Economic Recovery Effort
Burns Lake, B.C. – Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation, Pat Bell, will be taking the lead in the Province’s efforts to help the community of Burns Lake recover economically from Friday’s fatal fire that destroyed the Babine Forest Products sawmill.
Bell will be in Burns Lake this Friday to meet with community leaders and organizations. Bell’s Ministry will be working closely with the Ministry of Forests Lands and Natural resources on planning short and long term economic strategies."We need to work quickly and collaboratively with the community to develop a plan to support Burns Lake, its families and workers when the immediate crisis has eased" says Bell "My ministry is leading government’s efforts to stabilize the community and see the community’s economic development objectives achieved."
The Province has already developed a rapid response team to work on economic recovery efforts, and the ministry will announce shortly who will lead it.
The team will work with the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, the Village of Burns Lake, the Burns Lake Native Development Corp. and others to provide economic development and community transition expertise as part of the local
response effort.
Village of Burns Lake Mayor, Luke Strimbold says there will need to be an economic transition plan that will retain qualified workers, keep people on the job and set the stage for what he hopes will be the rebuilding of the mill in about 18 months time.
The Babine Forest Products mill is a joint venture between the Burns Lake Native Development Corp and Hampton Affiliates out of Oregon. There were 250 people directly employed by the mill, making it the largest employer in the community.

Ya, lets start with ending raw log exports and opening up a wack of new mills. Or would that be cutting in on some friends bottom line Pat?
As pointed out in the other story, for every mill job there is six jobs “in the bush”. So if there is a sale for raw logs and not for finished lumber whats your solution dragon? Lay everybody off and hope for tourists to show up?
I’m glas to see action is being taken quickly, on many different levels, to deal with the situation in Burns Lake. Great that Pat Bell has been appointed to get things moving. However, could someone please tell me what John Rustad does, what he is being paid for, and what he will be collecting a pension for at pulic expense down the road?
interceptor said, for every mill job there is six jobs “in the bush”. Not sure who supplied that information, that would mean that the 250 jobs at the Babine mill equals 1500 jobs in the bush? Not a chance, more like for every 6 jobs in the mill there is 1 job created in the bush. The most common ratio used in the industry is for every 1 mill job there is 3 spin off jobs created in the resource based Towns such as Burns Lake. Shipping logs, is shipping jobs! Next the loggers will be out of work because the Chinese can harvest, transport and ship the logs cheaper, the Goverment still gets the sale of the logs.
I am just using the numbers from the other story, but yours make no sense… You say six mill jobs for one in the bush? Then you say 3:1 the other way?
“Next the loggers will be out of work because the Chinese can harvest, transport and ship the logs cheaper, the Goverment still gets the sale of the logs”
This is whats happening with these coal mines up north. Chinese owned and supplying a lot of their own foreign workers. I hear Tumbler Ridge is close to having it’s own Chinatown.
Next, look for the invisable Big Dick Harris to come out of his den somewhere in the Okanogan to get in on the photo ops.
camoose and farnorth. You guys are the only ones that are right. There is going to be nothing come out of Pat Bell. There never is. Sorry One Democrat. You are right too. John Rustad and Dick Harris are photo opportunists! These guys can’t do a damned thing! They won’t but they will do a lot of BC Gov’t PR work trying to convince the suckers of Burns Lake that they care and are doing somehting about it. Just as they are helping the owners to reap their insurance money and salvage any money out of their logging rights. Don’t be easily duped people. The BC Gov’t is not going to help you anymore than they did Upper Fraser people or North Central Plywoods people. Politicians are just politicians, nothing more. they’ll blow smoke up your …..
I hope that there is some form of purpose for the Pat Bell and Christy Clarke visit to Burns Lake other that of votes!!! Somehow I donât think so. I have the feeling that the only reason they have visited this community is because of the high profile incident that occurred, and because of this they are looking to try to make themselves and the Liberal Gov out to be a caring political party. It has been my observation that Gordy, Christy and Pat are all cut from the same stone, that meaning they are all liars, they do not care about people or employment creation at all. The only thing you hear out of the mouths of the Liberal Gov is how China is very important to our future. I am here to say that Northwestern B.C. is completely devastated economically and this has occurred because of the changes made to the appurtenancy clause by the Liberal Gov. The impact this has on the Sawmill industry is simple, logs are no longer attached to sawmills, companies can, and are logging and shipping these logs into China. Also you need to understand that there are already Chinese corporations who own timber licenses in Northwestern B.C. who are logging and shipping these logs to China…and yes they are employing their own people. Almost all of the remaining Sawmill facilities in the Northwest (the ones still standing) are owned by Chinese companies who have absolutely no intention of operating them….all they wanted is the timber licenses. We are all going to look like Pat Bell and Christy Clarke pretty soon because they have their heads so far up some Chinese !## that their that everything that comes out of their mouths is $&!&. I do not believe that the Corporate and Government Psychopaths that these two people are, ever have, nor ever will, develop any caring for another human being other than themselves. The native reality is such that this token assignment given to Mr. Bell can be viewed as a caring gesture, perhaps this is a caring gesture but probably not….my question is, what about the remaining mills that are not running now. Christy and Pat what are you going to do to help the people in Hazelton, Kitwanga and Terrace?, or are you waiting for the remaining mills to blow up as well?
Oh …we donât expect a response from you because we know you donât really care about employment in B.C. All you care about is your new leaders in China and the jobs that you are shipping out in the form of raw logs.
Good to see Pat Bell stepping up to do the job, Believe he’s done a lot more for the interior than quite a few politicians in years past.
It was real nice to see Premier Clark attend Burns Lake and now Bell, means a lot to the community. Wish those in hospital well and good recovery, my sympathies to those who lost loved ones.
Think this is about a community that’s been hit hard not only with this tragedy, but also keeping their doctors. Government, they’re counting on you, so please do your jobs well. And thanks.
Just use whatever numbers you want, they`re all wrong anyway…
Lets use Interceptors garbled logic numbers..
We have lost 40 mills under the BC Liberals, 25,000 workers idled, I guess then because of BC Liberals policies we also lost another 150,000 jobs in the bush..
Yea Interceptor, suspect your right, well, you can go “use” some new numbers, whenever you find them.
Criminal, think the mill closures have anything to do with the pine beetles? Probably not. You wouldn’t want to include facts with your predictable rants.
criminal mind:
Are you suggesting that the market had nothing to do with the closures of the mills you are talking about?
Do any of them have to do with the failing of the pulp mill in Rupert. From my recollection our taxes supported that one to well over 1/2 billions dollars…and look where that got us.
And which political party do we want to tag that one with….hmm?
Do you posters have any idea where you’re going with this news release? This is about government assisting families in neeed, a community in need. Good Lord, give it up. The government of the day is helping these folks, give it a rest.
WELL said Slim!!
So the government is getting a guy who couldn’t properly run a hamburger stand to fix such a problem? Is the talent pool in the government that shallow?
so run for office culture, the province could use a big brain like yours.
oooooooooh! Big Brains – now there is a foreign concept to the Fiberals!!!
Well said Slim. Heaven forbid that the usual NDP supporters (the ones who still think it’s clever to say ‘Fiberal’) say something nice here. That would just be crazy.
