Metered Parking Pilot Project Report Near

Friday, February 24, 2012 @ 3:49 AM
Prince George, B.C.- Don’t be surprised if there is a call to return to metered parking in the downtown core.

The pilot project which saw the meters removed and a two hour free parking time given to folks parking downtown was put in place. The program was monitored by chalking tires.

The parking meter program used to generate money for the city, but without the meters, the City has lost that revenue.

Off street parking has also faced some financial challenges, especially when it comes to snow removal. The heavy snowfall of 2011 cost extra dollars for snow removal.

Director of Public Safety and Civic Facilities, Rob Whitwham, says the report on the pilot project will be presented to Council in mid-March.  Mayor Green says from her perspective, this is an item that should be fall under the umbrella of the Core review.

The Core review contract is expected to be awarded in late March. The review is to look for efficiencies, new sources of revenue for the City. The core review final report is expected to be complete in September.

…..and this will cost how much to get how much?

Good idea chase people out of yhe downtown core to the malls around the perimeter. It’s just not a cost effective way to gouge the public that are trying to spread their money around town by shopping in the down town area of Prince George.

It was cheap parking and downtown is getting busier now. Demand down there is higher so will continue whateverhappens unless its $10 a minute.

Maybe this will keep downtown employees vehicles off the street and into the parkades.
Open street parking revenue + parkade revenue.
Any chance of taxes being lowered from this revenue? Not.
In large City parking is a major revenue perhaps not for PG.
I still say let any veteran park anywhere they want for free.

This would be a major boneheaded move by the city. The core is finally starting to come around, and then they move in on a quick cash grab?

I’ve actually started walking around downtown and visiting the smaller shops in the core again. I’ve started just parking and wandering to see what I can find.

I can tell you that if metered parking comes back, I won’t be taking any strolls any more and instead heading to the malls or college heights where I can park for free.

Sure, it sounds cheap. But the hassle of watching the clock to make sure I don’t get a ticket, and scheduling around that, doesn’t make for the enjoyable experience I currently have.

Doesn’t the mayor own a business downtown? I am sure whatever she wants she gets even if we have to subsidy it (her free parking).

No more study or core review is needed just make a decision. The most efficient way to manage parking is to contract it out.

Impark is in the business, they are efficient and already provide this service to CNC, UNBC and the Hospital. It’s the most efficient way and could generate some revenue to the city. Now just make the decision!

Let me understand this, a study has been completed on the pilot project for downtown parking and now the mayor doesn’t want to act but instead wants that study included as part of yet another study (the core review)?

Bureaucracy and political spin at it’s finest.

Parking meters on residential streets would be the way to go. Parking costs should be relative to assessed value to keep it fair.

You’ve got to be kidding. downtown is getting interest finally and these clowns want to spend a mit full putting meters back in, replacing them continually after they get stolen, pissing everyone off. yup smooth move council. I work downtown and have seen a noticable change, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Re-visit this issue in 2 more years, not when a semblence of recovery seems at hand.

Put the meters back in. Other than the Northern there is nothing of interest in the whole downtown core.
Sell some of the dead weight property in the core while your at it, that is if you can find some sucker to buy it.

Put the meters back and I will never go downtown again. We pay tax on our car, tax on the gas , city taxes, park to go in and buy something that we will pay tax on, then we have to put money in a meter to park to do that ???? oh and also pay wages for someone to go around and give us a ticket fo not doing it???? I will shop at the malls …
