Crash South of Valemount Claims One Life

Valemount, B.C.- Highway 5 south of Valemount has been reopened to single lane alternating traffic following a fatal crash.
About 10:40 last night, Valemount RCMP responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision, involving a pick-up truck and a tractor/trailer unit. The collision was reported to have occurred on Highway #5, between the two Thompson River Bridges, approximately 50 km’s south of Valemount.
When police and emergency crews arrived at the scene, the passenger in the pick-up truck was confirmed to be deceased. The driver of the pick up, suffered serious injuries to his legs and has been transferred to Kamloops Hospital where he remains in stable condition.
The driver of the tractor/trailer was transported by ambulance to Clearwater Hospital for minor injuries. Highway #5 was closed to traffic in both directions to preserve evidence in the collision scene. The highway remained closed for the documentation and interpretation of any and all evidence located in the scene.
When the emergency personnel attended the scene, it was snowing heavily and temperatures were approximately -3C. The road surface was a mixture of fresh snow, compact snow and ice. The investigation continues to determine if speed was a factor, considering the conditions.
Police have been able to establish that alcohol was not a factor in this collision and the occupants of the pick-up truck were wearing their seat belts.
The name of deceased or any other information has not been released, pending the notification of the Next of Kin.
The cause of this crash remains under investigation. The investigators from the Valemount Detachment will work with the BC Coroner’s Service to establish all the information required to determine the cause.
Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or may have any information, which might be of value to the investigators, is asked to contact the Valemount Detachment at Tel# (250) 566-4466. This includes anyone who might have seen either of the vehicles on the highway immediately prior to the crash.
