Alternate Approval Process Gets Green Light

Prince George, B.C.- The way has been cleared for the Alternate Approval Process on the City’s plan to borrow $3,558,000.00 for its share of the construction cost of the River Road dike.
What is different this time around is that the alternate approval forms will not only be available at City Hall, they will also be available on the City’s website.
The forms will be available as of March 14th and the deadline to file the forms is April 24th.
If the alternate approval process fails to garner opposition ( through filled out and filed forms) of 10% of eligible electorate, the City will be allowed to go ahead and borrow the money. That means, 5,351 people would have to fill out a form opposing the borrowing.
The City expects to borrow the cash in the fall of 2014 with a proposed term of 20 years, annual debt servicing costs of $279,594, assumed interest at 4.5% and payments starting in April, 2015.
The move to the Alternate Approval process was unanimously approved ( Councillor Frank Everett was absent).

Will the City be conducting any advertising of the availability of this means to vote against a pet project?
I believe that it is unlikely that 5,351 City residents will take the time to register a response to the proposal, using the mandated process, which of course is why the City is proceeding in this manner.
It props up the illusion of democracy.
metalman.
The AAP is the furthest thing from democracy we have in our political system. Its a shame its even legal for them to use this to force hostage taxes on home owners.
IMO all those on council in support of the AAP for this ‘project’ have betrayed the citizens of PG.
