Legion Members Accept Offer

Tuesday, March 27, 2012 @ 4:00 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43 in Prince George, have voted 100% in favour of accepting an offer to purchase their building and lot on 7th Avenue.

Vice President and Acting President Bruce Gabriel, says 108 members turned out for the meeting and vote last evening “There was nothing negative expressed by any of the members, it was all positive”.

The offer will pay the Branch $650 thousand dollars, and allow Branch 43 to enter a lease with the new owners so the Branch can stay put for one year.

“We will stay for the year” says Gabriel “That will give us some time to find a new location.”

He says the sale will not only pay their bills, it will mean there will be some left over which, when combined with a couple of other projects they have in the works, will give the Branch a solid   foundation to move forward.

Branch 43 had faced some financial challenges resulting from a dwindling membership and a facility which was not always user friendly to the many seniors who are members. The Branch is hoping to find a new home that will be a little smaller, and all on one level to provide ease of access.

I thought I read previously that their ‘financial challenges’ arose because a previous employee plundered their bank accounts.

I dont recall that but generally Legions across Canada are fighting a loosing battle against dwindling membership and users vs increased costs.

You did read that. Sometimes people do not wish to dwell on those kinds of things.

I think the other reasons are quite valid as well.

as far as the building not being user friendly for seniors. That could have been taken care of long ago … with money, of course.

I suspect that there would have been funds available from somewhere to cover the cost of providing better access.

So, any guesses as to who bought it? Think it might be the city?

It wasn’t the city – in typical fashion, the city refused any assistance.

If they are smart they will find a place outside the city limits.

Whenever and wherever they move, my heart and eternal gratitude will follow them forever.

Well stated raresense. Agreed.

I agree, that’s a very appropriate comment raresense.

It was announced on this site a couple of weeks ago that two local businessmen made the offer to purchase. I thought it was the Coast Hotel people, but apparently not.

What will happen to the Elks Club if the Legion moves?

metalman.

This is most unfortunate allowing the legion to have to move. We as a citizenry of the free world haven’t any money to help our veterns of wars. The veterans have paid the price dearly for the freedom which we enjoy.
