Earth Hour Approaches

Saturday, March 31, 2012 @ 7:27 AM
Prince George, B.C.- Earth Hour 2012 is set for 8:30 pm (local time) tonight, and once again, the City of Prince George will mark the hour by turning off the lights at City Hall.

Earth Hour is an annual global event hosted by the World Wildlife Fund to encourage people to show their support for the fight against climate change.

Last year, millions of people in more than 135 countries took part in the event. In B.C., energy consumption was down by 1.08% province wide over that hour,  the equivalent of turning off 7.8 million 15-watt compact fluorescent bulbs.

According to BC Hydro, if everyone in the province practiced the same energy conservation method for one hour every day, it would have produced enough energy savings to power nearly 4,000 homes for a full year.

B.C.Hydro reported that last year, the greatest energy savings  during Earth Hour  in B.C. were recorded in Pitt Meadows  where energy consumption dropped by 6%. Tumbler Ridge was second with a 5% reduction. Due to technical constraints, the total energy consumption in the City of Prince George is not available to BC Hydro.  The problem is that  some substations in  Prince George also service areas  that are not technically in the City, that situation is expected to change next year when the Smart Meters have been installed.

I’ll make sure I have every light on.

And the tar sands are doing their best for Earth Hour aswell.
Cheers

I do not know about the rest of you, but either 100% or close to it of my electicity comes from hydro power, not fossil fuels so it will have minimal effect.

I wish they would change that to turning the lights off in those parts of the province, country, and the entire world that generate electricity from fossil fuels. Those who generate electricity by alternative methods should turn all their lights on or at least keep those on they normally have on.

Lights plus Baseboard Heaters will be on, why should I be cold when China gets our Oil!

A good part of the world has no power. They cook and heat with animal sh… I am sure they would like to celebrate funky earth hour. To those that think this is such a great idea open your main breaker for a week try life with cow sh.. Myself I will clebrate human hour and what technology has brought us mainly raising our life span up from thirty.

if we as consumers in bc reduce power consumption this enables hydro to meet their cheap sales agreements to the usa without incurring a cost to construct new dams. who benifits? we continue to pay more for hydro than those users south of the border. therefore i will use my portion of the power when ever i wish..

Oh common Norm doyour part and join the race.

Have a drive out by the refinery one night and marvel at the number of high power lights burning and not a soul moving. Then drive up by he jail around 3am when 99% of people are asleep in bed…..and then ask yourself if you can think of at least one good way we could conserve power.

move all the convicts to the refinery and turn out the lights?

LOL, good guess! You could probably heat and power your home for years on one night off the energy wasted at the Husky plant. If you want to green the planet you have to make big industry quit wasting power. And our cities should lead by example by shutting off unnecessary lights

How about turning off the street lights after 11pm, most of us have lights on our cars

“and then ask yourself if you can think of at least one good way we could conserve power.”

Put night vision CCVs into the cells?

All my lights were off all night I was down at the local pub having fun. It was my birthday.
Cheers

Think my smart meter blew.

Hey BCracer, while your reading try Tony Blairs book. Gives us some ideas on how we can elect the NDP in 2013.
