Councilor Excited About PG’s Future

Tuesday, April 17, 2012 @ 4:34 AM
Prince George, B.C. – A Prince George city councilor says there’s plenty to be excited about in Prince George and people need to concentrate on the positive rather than the negative.

Councilor Murry Krause says there are many positives occurring right now, from the 2015 Canada Winter Games to the new Hotel/Condo  project which was announced last week.  He cites the new Anti-poverty initiative, the Wood Innovation and Design Centre, the Keg restaurant renos,  last week’s Telus announcement and a new Elizabeth Fry building across from Telus.

Krause says “there are many things to be happy about. We always talk about the things that people see as negative but there’s a real optimism in the community about what the future holds. That’s what I’m going to concentrate on. I’m not going to drag myself down with negativity.”

Regarding the Performing Arts Centre Krause says “everybody wants to keep that alive. I think probably funding at this time would be a challenge but I think it’s something council is very committed to. Certainly the mayor has been very committed to it as have I so I think it’s something that we need to keep alive so when the opportunity arises we can build it. It’s an important amenity for a community, especially a community that wants to be seen as a capital.”

PAC – everybody wants to keep that alive??? Really! What part of no more pet projects that cost millions & millions do you not understand? FIX the ROADS and other failing infrastructure.

I think the message he is trying to give is be happy with the roads and other failing infrastructure.

Murry what world do you live in? Just pave the dam roads. The Keg hey what about MR. Mikes, just what is the big deal about an overpriced steak?

No one wants the PAC… get over it and let it die..

Isn’t this the same councillor who mused about the urgent need to *connect more with the public and listen to it*?

We decide – you pay! If the potholes become to unmanageable – call a taxi or take a bus!

I agree that there are some positive things going on around P.G., but then I get in my car, and pull out of my driveway, and recall that the huge negative of the roads over rides any good stuff. I drive around thinking “How am I going to afford a new front end?”, and “Gee, I hope the truck next to me doesn’t have to swerve in such a way that he side swipes me!” And “Holy smokes, was a bomb dropped on Massey?”
IIRC, last fall all the candidates talked about how they would fix the roads if elected, a few months later, they decide to fund less than what is needed to maintain the roads here. The roads here don’t need to be maintained, they need to be IMPROVED. What part of that is council not understanding?

Excited about what?…. failed roads, failing sewer pipes, puppy police, A PAC no one will use (or at least a very limited minority not to mention that PAC’s ok but not a nightclub…. very narrow minded indeed) Dikes that aren’t really needed, A police station that will look like 5 star resort…. and on and on and on… Oh by the way.. my street light has been out for months.. Nothing in the budget for that? Only called 3 times.. I like living here, PG has been good to me but acrider had it right… This council has gone nuts…

Remember Krause and the PAC at the next election. Can’t find money to fix the roads but spending 50 million for a PAC is a great idea.
To bad the rest of the councillors would not point blank tell the public if they are in favour of the PAC and then voting next time around will be much simpler.

Oh but we are seen as a capital Murry, crime capital of Canada 2 years in a row. Add the “Capital of the Worst Roads in B.C.” to our resume too. What kind of cars do people drive that can afford 350 -800 thousand dollar condos? Ones that like nice smooth roads. Well if you talk nice to the airport they might let them drive their fancy cars on the big long runway. There should be time in between those big jet landings.

Hopefully the Keg won’t end up like Tony Romas. People don’t want to add the car repair expense to a dinner out downtown.

Krause is the guy who believes that we should all dig a little deeper to pay for better roads, and oh yes, while you’re digging, come up with some more for the PAC.

Too bad we have to put up with this guy for another two and a half years. Taxpayers can’t afford his line of thinking.

No thanks.

Murray and some other Councillors are living in an entirely different world than the rest of us. Firstly most people I know have absolutely no desire to see a PAC built in Prince George. The people who are pushing for this facility are few and far between.

Some of the Councillors at City Hall seem to think that they need to think for us, because we cannot think for ourselves. Thats why when we say NO PAC, they say a PAC is wanted and needed.

If we say no more taxes, they say taxes will have to be increased to provide the services we asked for. So lets quit the BS, and answer these questions honestly.

Who in Prince George asked for the following.

1. A new a very expensive Cameron St Bridge at a cost of $11 Million when a $740,000.00 repair to the old bridge would have served us well.

2. A $38 Million Police Station, plus interest, when a renovated Police Station, or a new station for $20 Million would have served us well.

3. A Community Energy System, that costs millions and will not make much difference in the fine particulates in the air, and probably not return any money to the City. Certainly not in the first 15 years.

4. A $3 Million dollar new office building on 18th and Ospika for the Purchasing people, when they could have stayed where they are for a few more years, until the roads were fixed.

5. A Wood Innovation Building that has no actual purpose, other than to make Pat Bell feel good. This bloody building is a laugh. Why do we need to have such a big building. Who are we trying to impress. $75 Million pissed into the wind.

6. An additional $11.5 Million on a dike on River Road, that will NOT, repeat NOT, stop any flooding, but might force the water to other areas and cause further problems.

7. The Winter Games that will cost us $15 Million or more in additional taxes, so that a few people can have a few weeks of fun and games. (Contrary to the hype, there were not a lot of taxpayers in favour of these games) In the end they will cost us money.

None of the projects were seriously supported by taxpayers. The politicians, City Administration, and some private business’s were of course in favour.

The people of Prince George want a better level of service at a reduced cost, and no increases in taxes. This is the challenge to City Councillors, and Administration.

We take in $100 Million dollars in revenue every year. We spend every cent, and we borrow more. Whats wrong with this picture???

Any Councillor that does not want to get on board and start to turn things around in this City, should do the **right** thing and resign, so we can elect someone who does.

Murrays positivity is depressing to a lot of people in this City, because what he see’s as positive, we see as a waste of tax dollars, and a refusal to come to terms with reality.

Have a nice day.

I believe Mr. K. purposely or accidentally omitted the creation of an Insite safe drug injection office. Coming to your town soon.
What say, Mr. K? To turn a phrase, some people are “positively” against it.

Very nicely stated, Palopu.
I have been thinking maybe we should start recalling some of these folks. A credible threat of recall should put the rest in line with what the voters wanted.
This is why I vote for Fetterly. I believe he wants what “we” want.

the future is getting brighter. we are one day closer to the next civic election.

“A Prince George city councilor says there’s plenty to be excited about in Prince George and people need to concentrate on the positive rather than the negative”

First of all I don’t need a councillor to tell me what I should concentrate on! But since he thinks he can tell ME what do and what NOT to do, I will reply to HIM by requesting that he gets his head out of the pink clouds and looks at the stark reality of the shoddy condition this city has been mismanaged into, especially by those who have spent many years on this city council.

Can’t blame the relative newcomers for much of it, but the veterans were instrumental in causing the present mess!

Palopu:”Any Councillor that does not want to get on board and start to turn things around in this City, should do the **right** thing and resign, so we can elect someone who does. Murrays positivity is depressing to a lot of people in this City, because what he see’s as positive, we see as a waste of tax dollars, and a refusal to come to terms with reality.”

True words of wisdom!

I agree Prince George

The fact of the matter is that everyone sees the city from their viewpoint.

What impacts me the most?

When I leave this house, what affects me?

1. I drive .. so roads is number one. Easy, eh?

2. I go to Starbucks …. College Heigths, there is none downtown to speak of. The view of a dead city from the one in the Ramada makes me feel like I live in a bombed out city. I grew up in one in my early years, I do not need to be reminded I may die in one.

3. Hotel/Condo …. I won’t live in downtown and sure don’t want a view of a bombed out downtown.

4. I shop in suburbia because there is very little to shop for in the downtown.

I made thee mistake of thinking this was a progressive city when I moved here in 1973. For about 20 years, it actually was ….. but then things went wrong ….

That bombed out city I grew up in for my first almost 9 years? it pulled itself back out of the devastation and then came back to the what it used to be.

I do not have to be told what a positive attitude is. I have developed my own version over my lifetime. If you do not see the filth one lives in, all the positive attitude in the world is not going to pull you out of it. You have to be able to see the things around you that ought not to be that way and decide that you can do something about it and then make it work.

To see some of our elected officials having a hollier than thou defensive attitude is not a good sign.

All we need is that the City takes credit for the sunshine, the moonlight and the sky
blue color! The fact is, that those business people that made a decision to invest, has nothing to do with the City. Therefore, do not take any credit for it.
I tell you what, all of you, have been elec-
ted to look after our City and what is best
for all of us citizens. Your job is to pro-
vide us with clean water, clean air, no wood
burning please! Etc, etc. The City has to go after the H. Dep. and demand overpasses
for everybody`s safety including the school
children and adults that are going to college. No! we do no want any tunnels, too
dangerous! Everybody knows that! The City
must ask the H.Dep. To provide right turns
on the bypass,to beautify the bypass and all along the highway within the City. With
nice trees, shrubs, and flowers.Just like they do for all the other Cities in B.C. Our City has nothing like that! It is up to
our Mayor and Councillors to go after the
government and get it for our City.

Although I’m not as negative as some other people regarding the PAC, I agree that there are other issues that require attention first, especially the roads.

I am curious if the city will draw up the planned routes to and from venues for the CWG within the next year (if not already) and then focus all of their attention solely on those roads. All in an effort to give the illusion to visitors that PG roads really aren’t that bad.

Building fancy projects such as the Wood Innovation Building and the PAC, or hosting events such as the CWG are nice perks, but when it comes at the expense of the regular up keep of the city, are they really worth it?

In order to build for the future, PG needs to focus on the basic necessities of the city such as drive-able roads. Without a foundation to build upon, PG will just continue to decline.

“If you do not see the filth one lives in, all the positive attitude in the world is not going to pull you out of it. You have to be able to see the things around you that ought not to be that way and decide that you can do something about it and then make it work.”

WOW…Gus is whining again about the City LOL Maybe it’s time you move Gus!! If your long on bitchin but short on solutions then that makes you part of the problem and nothing but a blow hard whiner. So if were living in filth and it “ought not to
be this way and you can do something about it” Ok fair enough….so what are you doing about it Gus? Lets here all your solutions cuz all I EVER see outta you is U jumping on EVERY single post on opinion 250 about the City of Prince George. Your a career complainer and nothing else.

Well we will have 2 or 3 wonderful hotels-I’m including the supposed Delta. We may have a wonderful PAC in the future, but we WILL and DO have roads that are a complete disgrace. The roads are a frikin embarrassasment and no one seems to have any idea how much it will cost, how to pay for it or even getting the ball rolling on how to do any of these things. I like Prince George, but the roads are one thing that make me want to move. And fixing the roads will be expensive, but must be done.
Why is there no committee to find a long term plan to fix this disgrace. I’m fed-up with driving on broken ashphalt

The Delta hotel is going to put some pressure on the coast. I hope they take opportunity and give it a facelift.

Krause old chap! Perhaps if you and the rest of the old boys and girls club dealt with all the negatives you are responsible for in this city, there wouldn’t be much negative left for the people to have to worry about!

Well at least we can see the condition of our streets but thats only part of the story. What about the things that we cant see like our sewer and water systems

It seems that all the things that are done by our city also need some impovement. Saw crew remove the planks that they install each fall for communiy rinks. The crew drove two large trucks towing a lowbed up a walhway. The area was still soft from spring thaws but they drove their vehicles over this soft soil and cut huge ruts into the walkway.

No sence no feeling .
Cheers

Zues88, what are your suggestions for improving PG? I’ve read many of the thoughts that gus has contributed on this blog, what about you?

I agree retired. Apparently the City fixes approx 500 water breaks a year.

Plastic pipe that was supposed to last 40 years is breaking after 20 years. This is a serious problem, along with all the other water and sewer problems.

There is no point paving over an area where you expect to have a water break.

The whole process of water, sewer, roads, garbage, etc, has to be revisited with a view of finding a long term solution.

What this will mean is that all the perks, fancy foriegn trips, gala parties, salary increases, etc; will have to be held in check. In addition we need to review our costs for every part of the City.

As an example, few people are aware of the fact the the City subsidizes the Charles Jago Sports Centre, to the tune of $300,000.00 per year. Apparently the agreement is that we would do this for 30 years. When the City Manager was asked if we could do something about this expenditure he stated that we could **look into it**. Havent heard a word since.

In addition the University also funds the centre to the tune of $300,000.00 per year, even though the University itself is almost bankrupt.

When this agreement was set up to fund the Sports Centre, it was referred to as **creative accounting**

This facility needs about 3000 members to break even. I dont know what the membership is but I would suggest that they are at least 2000 short.

The funny thing is that most of the people who were in favour of this project are not members and are conspicuos by their absence.

Why do Politicians, Government Administrators, Contractors, etc; all eschew the benefits of these types of buildings, but do not join them, and contribute to the overhead.

I suggest if you are not willing to join and pay the $350.00 per year as a member, then you shouldnt be voting to build it.

Same thing applies to the $900,000.00 replay board that Mayor Kinsley got for the CN Centre. This was a huge expenditure of tax dollars, which was going to increase the number of fans who attended Cougers games, and as a result generate more revenue for the City.

Well the exact opposite happened. Fan attendence went down, and revenues plummeted. Cost to run the machine increased, and we are stuck with another white elephant.

Have a nice day.

So uh….just curious…..who out of all you posters, voted for Krause. C’mon….admit your guilt…. (not me)

‘No hablo Ingles’

People need to concentrate on the positive. Then do something about Hookers the City sent to my area. I can tell you now we do not want a safe Injection site in our area. This City is too worried about Canadas social problems and are bringing them to P.G. with all the services we are providing ,but one feeds off the other. Why is the new seniors housing project being called the Elizabeth Fry Building?? Are the seniors being screwed again??Sorry I am so negative.
