Which Day Do You Prefer for the New February Holiday?
Prince George, B.C. – The Provincial Government is committed to having a new statutory holiday in February, “Family Day”, but just when that day will be has yet to be decided.
The Province has announced it will be asking British Columbians for their input on which Monday in February would be the best choice.
The options are the second or third Monday in February. The 3rd Monday would coincide with a statutory holiday already offered in five other provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba and PEI) and with President’s Day in the States. But, the second Monday in February would mean folks in B.C. could avoid some of long weekend traffic generated by having the holiday coincide with others.
The Province is looking for input from the public, worker groups, employers, tourism industry and the business sector to see which date would make the most social and economic sense before finalizing a date for the new February holiday.
You can state your preference by clicking here.
The consultation process is open until the 22nd of this month.

Feb 1 to Feb 28 works for me
Having it on a Friday would be the ticket!!!
Have it at approximately the half-way point between New Years Day and Good Friday, on either a Friday or a Monday. This would men, though, that this holiday day would not be a set date year after year.
Feb 30th
As long as it aligns with my regular every second friday off, we are good to go!
“… the second Monday in February would mean folks in B.C. could avoid some of long weekend traffic” …. long weekend traffic in mid-February in BC?? Don’t really think that’s an issue. I like the idea of switching it up to a Friday, just to be a bit different. Being retired, the actual date doesn’t matter to me.
Feb 29th
I never get holidays or long week end so I`ll have to go with He spoke Feb 30th
How about the day after the day that we vote the Lieberals out of office then we would have two things to celebrate!!
We don’t need any more freakin’ stat holidays especially in the dead of winter.
I have my preferences, but my vote is private.
Can we start working on a holiday for June now?
You can stick it Christy Clarke! You sell out!
If a tree falls in the woods and there is no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?
I agree with weaksauce. We have enough holiday as it is.
I notice that they dont give you a choice of No more holidays. How can you have a fair poll if you do not give people all the options???
I think we need a tax holiday. No more tax increases for 10 years.
definately Friday, where i work we dont close, half of the staf takes friday the other half takes monday.
Are the Scrooges, who claim we already have enough holidays, business owners with employees or what? Just how will another stat threaten your wellbeing?
For one thing, we the taxpayer, will be paying millions of dollars for people to sleep in late & then spend the rest of the day watching TV. For another: Why February????
The cost of another stat has to come out of prices, krusty. A lot of businesses are operating pretty close to the line now, and while most people are all for having a paid holiday in between New Years and Easter the businesses that pay for it will have to pass on its cost, or they’ll be that much closer to being out of business.
“We don’t need any more freakin’ stat holidays especially in the dead of winter”
Are you kidding…we can never have enough holidays. The more the merrier!!!
“A lot of businesses are operating pretty close to the line now, and while most people are all for having a paid holiday in between New Years and Easter the businesses that pay for it will have to pass on its cost, or they’ll be that much closer to being out of business”.
If they are that close to going out of business, another paid holiday isn’t going to make any difference.
mythoughts has clearly never run a business, it must be nice to be so blissfully ignorant. Ever hear of a death by a thousand cuts?
And you can bet that the consumer will pay for all of this in the end. Just remember not to complain when prices go up.
I agree with JohnnyBelt. No more holidays.
Go to work and earn a dollar and pay some taxes.
There are two many people in this Country who are on a holiday all the time, problem is they do it on someone elses dollar.
How about an earned paid holiday. You work an extra 8 hours on your own time, and at a later date you get the day off with pay, that way everone wins.
This particular holiday is being offered to buy some votes. It seems to be working for some people.
I watched a bit on the news channel today that spoke about Social Jetlag. The gist of
the news bit is that our ever increasing
desire to chase that elusive lifestyle is
costing us our health. So another holiday
really is what we need & even more of them.
I go to work & pay my taxes, I do get earned vacation time. This stat holiday is already observed in some Provinces, we are just catching up, but hey, if you want to work on that stat on your own time by all
means, fill your boots ;).
Palopu…I work a 40 hour week every week and have worked for the same employer for 20 years now so I’ve paid my share of taxes and have earned every day of my vacation.
Methinks it doesn’t matter to teachers because they will adjust their nearest Pro-D day to the next or previous week of the month. Most likely a Friday.
I agree that you have earned every day of your vacation, however we are not talking about vacation time off. We are talking about paid statutory holidays, of which we already have more than enough.
Working people can get anywhere from two weeks holidays to five weeks or more depending on where you work. In addition some get accumulated time off, sick days, etc; etc; Others get SFA.
One more stat holiday to make Christy Clark look good probably isnt a solution to anything, however if you like the idea then go for it.
Goodbye H S T day….
How many people actually get stats off now anyways? I can’t remember the last stat off I got, and that includes Christmas.
peegee: “How many people actually get stats off now anyways? I can’t remember the last stat off I got, and that includes Christmas.”
Exactly. It’s just another day that the employer has to pay time and a half or more. And don’t think those costs won’t be passed down.
