Prince George ,B.C.- Conservation Officers in the Prince George region are looking for the person who shot a sow bear near Hixon this week, leaving her three little cubs orphaned and distraught.
The Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter was contacted by a woman in Hixon who relayed the story of the now orphaned bears Shelter operators, Angelika and Peter Langen loaded up and headed out from their Smithers area shelter to see if they could assist the cubs.
When the arrived on the scene, Angelika reports the orphaned trio was still close to mom’s carcass and occasionally tried to nurse.
As they approached, the cubs climbed a nearby tree. A small bear trap was placed at the bottom of the tree, but even when the cubs decided to come down, they avoided the trap.

Angelika and Peter decided to try something different, so they placed a trap near “mom”. It took just 40 minutes for the first cub to enter the trap. The second trap was set next to the first, and in half an hour the second cub was secured. Cub number three was a bit more cautious, and once the first cub had been moved to the transport box, it took almost an hour before number 3 would walk into that trap.
(At right, frightened cubs huddle )
With all three cubs contained, Angelika and Peter headed back to the Shelter where the cubs are now reported to be drinking milk and eating fruit. One of the cubs seems a little more lethargic and is said to be causing some concern. Angelika writes on Facebook that she hopes to tranquilize all three tomorrow so they can be given a very thorough examination to ensure they are in good health.
The Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter could use some financial assistance to help bring these cubs to a stage where they can be returned to the wild. If you would like to help out, click here for details on how to make a donation to the Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter Society.

Anyway, good to see the cubs doing okay, hope the shooter gets his or her Karma doubled negatively.
Ditto Slim2229. Thankfully there are people like Angelika and Peter Langen and I will be making a donation to the Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter. As for the person that heartlessly killed the mother bear and put these cubs in peril…I’ll save my breath, but will again thank the people that have the hearts and the empathy for other creatures that I wish we all had.
No input from the Conservation Service? Is this not what they are paid to do?
This shooter must get punishment to fit the crime and the resulting aftermath. Justice would be to have to fund all expenses in caring for these cubs until they can be released safely back into the wild. Also, lose all hunting privileges forever. Something has to be done to make people respectful of laws and appreciate rights afforded. The mother bear would have raised these cubs at no expense. This individual has now incurred great expense for a shelter to do what Mother Nature would have done. Maybe hitting the purse strings will drive the message home. Otherwise, it will just happen again.
