Relay For Life Underway in Prince George

Saturday, May 12, 2012 @ 11:49 AM
Cancer survivors prepare to start the  victory lap which officially kicks off the annual  24 hour Relay for Life.
Prince George, B.C. – The 20th annual Relay For Life is underway at Masich Place Stadium as participants celebrate those who have survived cancer and remember those who fell to the insidious disease.

Master of Ceremonies Doug Jones and his son Jamieson, a cancer survivor, opened the event at 10 this morning, with speeches from Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond, Mayor Shari Green and officials with the Canadian Cancer Society.   And then cancer survivors wearing yellow survivor shirts kicked off the relay by taking part in a victory lap of the stadium track.
After that, they gathered at the south end of the stadium for a cancer survivors group photo.  ( photo at right)

Lone participants and those on teams will circle the track over the next 24 hours while at the same time bonding, sharing memories, celebrating and raising funds for the fight against cancer.

The B.C. and Yukon Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society says 142 teams and over 1630 participants signed up for this year’s event.   It will be marked, as always, by the candlelight vigil at midnight tonight as luminaries, or candles in bags bearing the names of those who have battled cancer, are set around the track in a silent and solemn ceremony.
