Boating Mishap Claims One Near Kelowna

Saturday, May 19, 2012 @ 2:20 PM

Prince George, BC – RCMP in West Kelowna say a 43-year-old man from the Lower Mainland drowned when a boat capsized in Headwaters Lake yesterday evening.

Corporal Barbara Holley says although there were life jackets in the boat at the time, the three male occupants were not wearing them.  The men had been fishing and the boat flipped when they stood up.

Two of the men were able to make it to shore, their friend did not.  Headwaters Lake is approximately 30-kilometres west of Peachland.  The BC Coroners Service is investigating.

Boaters: please wear a PFD. Those inflatable Mustang ones are light and comfortable. Don’t make me haul your lifeless, rigamortis body out of the water.

Once, last weekend, is enough. But I know there’ll be more. Just make sure it’s not you, or your fishing party.

It happens so fast, and you are in the water before you even understand what happened. I know, it happened to me. The life vest was uncomfortable so I took it off while we were fishing quietly, lazing in the sun. Suddenly we were in the water and still do not know what happened, but I got lucky and was able to slip on the vest, which saved my life, we had a long swim in cool water. My partner was smarter, he had not taken his pfd off, it saved his life too. These things happen unexpectedly, that is why you should wear the pfd at all times when in the boat.
It is not like you are planning to tip the boat, you don’t know if or when it will happen and if you strike your head in the process, you might not be concious enough to put on the pfd. Please be safe.
