Walk of Honour at Fort George Park

Saturday, May 26, 2012 @ 10:58 AM

Prince George, B.C. – The third annual Walk of Honour, which honours Canada’s troops and their families, kicked off at Fort George Park this morning.

The walk pays tribute to the country’s soldiers and also provides an opportunity to raise funds for Winch House, a place where veterans can get the assistance they need to make a full return to civilian life. Returning soldiers and their families can stay at Winch House in Vancouver at no charge as the returning soldier undergoes whatever treatment they may need to “become whole again.”   Participants in today’s event can walk 2-and-a-half or five kilometers to raise funds.

Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond was joined by Mayor Shari Green, some members of council, Royal Canadian Legion members, former Mayor Dan Rogers and members of families in participating in the walk. Members of the Rocky Mountain Rangers reserve unit, Prince George Fire/Rescue, Prince George RCMP and other first responders also turned out for the walk and barbeque.

“OTTAWA — The senior managers at Veterans Affairs Canada received almost $700,000 in bonuses and extra pay last year even as their department came under fire for failing to help former soldiers.

The last several years have seen numerous complaints from veterans about poor treatment from the department and breaches of their privacy by Veterans Affairs bureaucrats.”

“Veterans Ombudsman Guy Parent has also raised questions about the performance of the department in several high profile cases.

In December, he raised issues about how the department treated families of ex-soldiers affected by the spraying of Agent Orange. He described the treatment as “scandalous” after federal bureaucrats denied the financial claims of spouses.

A month earlier, the ombudsman’s report revealed that some of Canada’s most severely injured soldiers were not being told by Veterans Affairs about all of the benefits they were eligible to receive.”

“the ombudsman’s report revealed that some of Canada’s most severely injured soldiers were not being told by Veterans Affairs about all of the benefits they were eligible to receive”

So the reason for receiving the bonuses is that they saved the department millions of dollars?

Scandalous!!
