Dutch Canadian Ties Honoured at City Hall Cenotaph

Saturday, May 26, 2012 @ 12:56 PM

Prince George, B.C. – The liberation of Holland by Canadian soldiers in 1945 was celebrated Saturday afternoon at the Veterans’ Plaza in front of Prince George City Hall.

The Dutch Canadian Tulip Commemoration ceremony marked the Canadian role in the liberation of Holland 67 years ago.  And the tulip is representative of the close friendship between Canada and Holland.

The ceremony in bright sunshine was punctuated with stirring stories of family survival from Master of Ceremonies Jerry Wessel, a story of what it was like to actually be on the front lines as the liberation on Holland was taking place from John Scott with Branch 43 of the Royal Canadian Legion, and a statement of pride in her dual Dutch and Canadian heritage from Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond, whose mother is Dutch.

Prince George city council was well-represented at the solemn yet uplifting event, with Mayor Green and councillors Krause, Koehler, Hall and Skakun in attendance.
