Structural steel is being put in place at the new RCMP building – submitted photo
Prince George, B.C. – The construction of the RCMP building in downtown Prince George is entering a new stage.
The concrete has all been poured and set, the structural steel framing is underway and in early June work will shift to close in the building. “That will be a big milestone to get that done” says Phil Long, Maple Reinders’ Project manager. He says it will take a number of months to completely “close in the skin” of the building, “There are a number of different materials on the outside, brick wall and various panels and that will be a major milestone.”
Once the “envelope” of the building has been closed, Long says the interior work can get underway “We’ll start interior framing, but we won’t be doing any boarding until the building is closed in and water tight.”
Long says at this point, he believes the project is under budget, and ahead of schedule. “We are trying to get ahead every day we can, because those days are always used later on in the finishing stages.”
The building is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2013.

Who’s names will be on the brass plaque.
The plaque should read.
This building cost PG taxpayers $40 Million dollars plus interest over 20 years, for a total of approx $75 Million.
It will stand here in all its perceived glory to indicate to the people of Prince George, how you can over build, and waste money for no reason except, that you wished to do so.
This building will be a testament, as to why we have such bad roads. It will also be a testament, to how the City can (if not watched closey) waste millions in tax dollars.
The question for the next 10/20 years will be. You spent how much on a police station??? Are you crazy??
Hey Palopu, maybe we could have just moved them to the Roll-a-dome?
Curious. Are the furnishings for the building included in the price, or are we going to have to come up with a few more million to furnish the building ?
Good question middle finger. Who knows?. We are probably on the hook for another million.
One should keep in mind that protective services take 32.99% of our general operating fund expenses. The cost of this building and the interest attached to it is in addition to this cost.
Ruez. I think that we should have renovated the present building even if it cost us $10 Million it would have been much better than the monolith they are now building, or failing that we could have built them a new building for say $20/25 Million. We certainly didnt need to go to $40 Million, plus interest.
The is the wrong building, in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
The plaque should read “Thanks Colin”.
Kingsley started this ball rolling years ago when he picked the site and had the city buy it. (He also made sure John Major made some cash along the way in moving the Casino, and eventually the bingo hall to 16/97).
At least Stolz and the last council cut a few million off the price tag by gasing the silly underground parking. They better sell the current building once they move and use the proceeds to pay off the debt on the new building!
The old building will probably be rented out to some service groups. Seems it ok for selling or renting, however it wasnt ok for a police station.
Just add this property to the other property the City owns, and you will see where the money is spent.
Palopu: you know as well as I do, at best, this building might be renovated by some level of government and turned into a friendly centre .. .:) or some kind of Head Start organization. It will look good out of the windows of the proposed hotel, condo project. I apologize for my negativity, but this city just seems to be one half private, one half government funded agencies of one sort or another.
I am not being negative at all when I say that I have lost the respect that I once did have for the RCMP since they can not afford the public a seperate independant investigative and sentancing body to investigate wrong doing by the RCMP. In my opinion thered should be a bronze swastika on the front of the new Mine Kempf.
No, no….not negative at all, moving the conversation from a soon to be empty building to a poor fashion choice of a brown shirt in 1936 Germany.
