Prince George, B.C. – An American man taking part in a Diabetes Awareness Drive has been seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident near Dome Creek.
Corporal Madonna Saunderson with North District RCMP Traffic Services says the 64-year-old man was riding his motorcycle, accompanied by a 4-member support team, heading for Alberta on a trip that would eventually take him to his destination in Alaska. He left Prince George this morning but when he arrived at McBride was notified of the mud slide which has closed Highway 16, 8 kilometres west of the junction with Highway 5. Because it is not known when efforts will begin to clear the slide, and when the road will re-open, the man and his team decided to return to Prince George.
Sometime around 11 this morning, according to support members who witnessed the accident, the man’s bike started to wobble and went off the highway into the ditch. It is unclear what speed he was travelling at. A police accident re-construction analyst is working to determine that and other factors.
Cpl Saunderson says the victim suffered very serious injuries and was rushed by ambulance to University Hospital of Northern BC in Prince George, where he is undergoing emergency surgery this afternoon. Cpl Saunderson says the witnesses to the accident have told investigators there were no other vehicles or any animals involved in the accident.
The rider and support team, due to the Highway 16 closure, decided to drive back to Prince George and had made Dawson Creek their stopping point for tonight, before carrying on to Alaska.
The victim’s name and home town in the U.S. have not been made available.
