Full Steam Ahead On Two City Infrastructure Projects

Monday, July 30, 2012 @ 3:51 AM

Prince George, BC – There will be some traffic disruptions as work continues on two city infrastructure projects…

The installation of a sanitary sewer line, connecting the new Boundary Road development to the City’s sanitary lift station in the BCR Industrial subdivision, will see Pacific Street closed from Peterbilt at 6333 Pacific to Sintich Road.  There will be a detour available to the Danson Industrial subdivision by way of Highway 97 and Sintich Road.

However, city staff says access from Continental Way to Pacific Street will be closed as required during the construction of that section of line as it crosses Continental Way.  The contractor, Colmar Construction, will be posting signs in advance of the closures, but the project is underway and is expected to continue until October.

The Boundary Road Connector will be the main transportation link for the developing airport logistics park.

Meantime, construction on the City’s District Energy System is entering phase two, which will enable the new RCMP building to be tied into the DES from 6th Avenue and Quebec Street, up 5th Avenue and across Victoria Street.  City staff advises area street closures will be in effect as construction progresses along the route.

That work is expected to wrap up in September.

Is anyone else wondering what is going to happen to the DES if Lakeland Mills is not rebuilt?

It will be gas fired. Same horse different colour.
Cheers

Not sure but thought I read something recently in the media that canfor is now supplying the fibre (wood waste). Doesn’t the City own the boiler unit that sits on the Lakeland site? Would need to know more about the contractual agreement to better understand changes with the DES. Post fire is Lakeland obligated to follow through with its operational and supply contract with the City? Someone mentioned to me the other day that even if Lakeland rebuilds the newer technology does not require as many people to run the mill, consequently fewer employees would be needed.

I am sure that people who know the details of the project already have a plan in hand.

I wonder if that future mudslide site just cleared above Pacific Street is part of the route for the sanitary sewer line.
metalman.

Well the cost will certainly increase if they use natural Gas instead of hog fuel. The nice thing is natural gas burns a lot cleaner… but again.. this is a poor investment.

I am still wondering what the true cost will be. The construction for this was put out for bid and no company “won” the bid so the city is doing it themselves. Did we hire extra workers for this or have they taken away workers from other city services to fill these positions at the sacrafice of other things.. like our city ? Anyone know ?

The Community Energy System at Lakeland was to decrease the number of trucks running from Lakeland to Intercontinental Pulp, because the hog fuel would be burnt on site. This would reduce fine particulates into the airshed by 80mt per year.

The problem now is that they have to truck hog fuel into Lakeland to keep the System running. This means that there will (for now anyway) be no reduction in pollution.

In addition I beleive that the price for natural gas has dropped significantly since this plan was conceived. Initially the cost of burning wood waste was cheaper than burning natural gas, and was to produce a revenue stream (non tax) for the City. Now with a glut of natural gas, does this still hold true, or would it be cheaper to burn natural gas.

These are questions that I am sure the City will be in no hurry to answer, as they have committed us to this system, and we are now stuck with it.

Same or higher pollution, less revenue stream, and possibility of higher costs for hog fuel. The contract is with Lakeland. If Lakeland doesnt rebuild, then there is no contract, and market forces will decide the prices.

We should have left well enough alone, but didnt.

It looks like we may have another **White Elephant** on our hands.

“… future mudslide site just cleared above Pacific Street is part of the route for the sanitary sewer line…”?

Hmmm … tell us more metalman

“future mudslide site”
Noticed that all of the trees and brush were cleared off in a narrow (30-40 feet) corridor on a very steep hillside just South of the Telus shack and storage locker rental place on Pacific. Further South on Pacific, just across from the former Rustad office, the hillside let go and slid out onto the road. In that location, the trees and undergrowth were not even disturbed. The angle of the slope appears to be about the same in both cases.
Hey, maybe plans are to secure the cut with a geo grid or similar, so that it can’t begin to shift during a heavy rain.
A whole lot of surmising going on here with my comments.
metalman.

The district energy system now gets their hog fuel from Isle Pierre. Isle Pierre has probably 500 truck loads on their stock pile and Northwood probably 2500 on their stockpile and no more room to take any. I can’t see hog prices going up much, but who knows once the co-gen plant in Mackenzie comes on line.

I see CN has been doing major work on the line into the old Winton Global mill in Bear Lake… maybe thats where the Lakeland logs will end up. I would like to see them relocate to the Rustads site, but who knows really….

” ….. enable the new RCMP building to be tied into the DES from 6th Avenue and Quebec Street, up 5th Avenue and across Victoria Street.”

I do not understand why the streets which have had the distribution pipes from the DES installed have not been paved yet. Hope they do not plan to install pipes first and then do the paving. That’ll take till the fall and longer.

It is a royal pain in the backside driving in parts of downtown. Even the placement of some of the detour signs is confusing for those who are attendng businesses within the detour paths.

“future mudslide site”

Theoretically the City should have some consultants ….civil & geotechnical …involved. Have not seen any report of that though.
