IIO Signs MOU With B.C. Policing Agencies
Prince George, B.C.- The Prince George Detachment of the RCMP is now officially “signed on” with the Independent Investigations Office.
A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between “E” Division, 11 municipal police departments, the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority Police Service, the Stl’atl’imx Tribal Police (represented by their Chief Constables and Chief Officers) and the IIO.
The MOU addresses all aspects of investigations including notification to the IIO, scene security, designation of subject and witness officers and concurrent investigations.
"The creation of this MOU is essential to the success of the Independent Investigations Office” says Chief Civilian Director of the IIO Richard Rosenthal. “This was a lengthy and complex process which was approached with a spirit of co-operation and collaboration by every B.C. law enforcement agency and the Police Services Division of the Ministry of Justice. Input was received from police union representatives, police boards and civil liberty and advocacy organizations. Everyone came to the table, in good faith, to provide the IIO with the tools necessary to improve public confidence in investigations of the police and to bring the recommendations of Justice Braidwood to fruition. This is an excellent start."
The civilian-led investigative body is scheduled to start its works on September 10th and will conduct criminal investigations regarding police-related incidents that result in death or serious harm.
