Rare Chance to Meet the Dragon

Saturday, August 25, 2012 @ 2:32 PM
Prince George, B.C. – Tomorrow, a rare opportunity , as the NorthBreast Passage Dragon Boat team of Prince George, welcomes the public to “meet the dragon”.

The event at West Lake Provincial Park at 2 tomorrow afternoon, is meant to spread awareness about the Dragon boat team, about breast cancer and maybe even attract some other breast cancer survivors to sign up .

The boat is paddled by 20 women, all breast cancer survivors. “Our youngest is about 42 and the oldest member on our team is 72” says Sharon Parrett, one of the team members.

She says the afternoon meet and greet   will allow the public to get up close with the Dragon Boat, and two lucky people will have their names entered into a draw for the opportunity to actually ride IN the boat and take a shot at paddling. “Many of the dragon boat teams we compete against have a waiting list  of those who want to join the team. We don’t have that, and hopefully, this event will give other breast cancer survivors an opportunity to meet with team members and encourage them to sign up.”

She says it may also provide an opportunity for those who have cabins on West Lake, to learn more about the odd looking boat that appears on the Lake when the women are training.

The team will be heading to Penticton for September 8th and 9th, where   they will compete with about 90 other Dragon Boats. Last year, the NorthBreast Passage team came home with the gold medal for the Survivor Challenge, and   finished 5th in the platinum division of the women’s competition which is open to all dragon boat teams.
