Terry Fox Run Goes Sunday

Saturday, September 15, 2012 @ 5:06 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Hundreds of Prince George residents are expected to walk, run and wheel in the 32nd annual Terry Fox run, which takes place tomorrow.  They’ll join people from 112 communities in BC and the Yukon in the drive to raise funds for cancer research.

In 1980, when Terry Fox decided to run across Canada on a prosthetic leg to raise money for the fight against cancer, he knew he faced an immense challenge.  After running almost a marathon a day for 143 days, Terry was forced to stop when cancer recurred in his lungs.  His Marathon of Hope came to an end but the spark he had lit in the hearts and minds of Canadians ignited into the cancer crusade that has lasted more than three decades.

Since the Marathon of Hope in 1980, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $600 million for cancer research.  This past year the people of B.C. and the Yukon collectively raised over $2.9 million through communities, teams, schools and head shavers.  The Terry Fox run is completely volunteer-driven, which allows 84 cents of every dollar raised to be donated to cancer research.

Registration takes place at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Community Foundation Park at the corner of 7th and Dominion.   The 5 kilometre run takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., kicking off from the Terry Fox statue.
