SD 57 Trustees Call on Min. of Education To Withdraw Request

Prince George, B.C.- The Trustees for the School District 57 are calling on the Minister of Education to withdraw his request that their board, like others in the Province, find 1.5% insavings in order to provide a raise to support workers.
In a letter to Don McRae, the Trustees say they support the collective bargainning process, that the request comes too late in the fiscal year, and while the Minister makes suggestions for "savings", there are none that can be found.
The Chair of the Board of Trustees asks, on behalf of the Board, that the request be withdrawn.

It looks to me that the total salaries of all employees make up 85% of the total operating costs. Some of these would not be in the bargaining unit. How many, I do not know.
However, even if not all the employees would get a 1.5% increment on average, would.
That means that a saving of up to 8.8% would have to be found in the services and supply component of the expense budget.
What has the Minister been smoking?
Good on the SD57 for responding as they did.
Maybe we need to close some more schools so that we can turn them into treatment centres with the “savings” in education and disrupt a few more neighbourhoods who thought their child could walk to school.
Find the savings or get fired….closing a few schools just might be the only option they have.
The trouble is, which schools do you close? We are not left with many neighbourhood schools left. It is very sad. That was one of the nice things PG had going for it, small, close knot community schools.
I often drive by the schools that have closed, and glance at their vast playgrounds and wonder, where on earth the city/school district/government would ever be able to rebuild schools with such amazing and vast school yards. But as always the message we get from our government is contradicting, we care about our kids, we don’t want them to be obese! We have removed sugary snacks from vending machines! Yet, we don’t care enough to preserve the schools we have with their playgrounds where kids are actually outside being active.
# of students of the decline, # of addicts needing treatment on the rise. What a society we live in.
Yeah simple get rid of a support worker or two and there is your savings, cant see how that was tough math.
Please note I am joking…….
