Enjoying The Winter Life

Charlice Hartl shows dad, Tully Hartl, how well she can spin on the ice at the Civic Centre

Prince George, BC – There is something almost magical about those clear, crisp winter days when the sun shines…

For Charlice Hartl, Saturday was just that kind of day.  The 11-year-old went skating not once, but twice – at two different outdoor rinks in Prince George.

When 250News caught up with Charlice, she was on the ice for the second time at the Civic Centre Plaza, showing her dad, Tully, just how well she was teaching herself to spin.  Her first turn had been earlier in the morning on a rink in the Hart.  She had rosy cheeks and said she was having a great day.

As were numerous others who ventured outdoors to partake in all the winter activities that make Prince George a wonderful place to live.

Danielle Reid and five-month-old Opie, a german shepherd-golden retriever cross, were enjoying the day with a brisk walk through the new dog park near Duchess Park.

Reid has just recently moved into the neighbourhood and loves the close proximity of the park, as does Opie.

Reid said over the past week the pup has taken to fetching her shoes when it’s time to go for a walk!

A little further to the north, the Hart Highlands Community Ski Hill was bustling with skiers and snowboarders of all ages taking advantage of the recent dusting of new snow and blue skies.

Photo at left shows Theresa Gumpel (pink) and her friend Kat Gunion getting ready to wrap up the day.

The pair had been helping Gumpel’s five-year-old son learn to snowboard.

It was Gunion’s first time at the local hill and she said it was a great place to learn.

Also spotted out in numbers this past weekend: snowmobilers, runners working off their holiday feasts, and kids with sleds and toboggans taking to hillsides throughout the city.

With temperatures forecast to hold steady in the -8 to -10 range for daytime highs this week, it’s likely there will be more of the same for the rest of the week.
