Cougars Fall To Oil Kings in Edmonton.

Monday, January 21, 2013 @ 2:30 AM

The Prince George Cougars are heading home with two of six possible points following a 6-1 loss to Edmonton on Sunday. Edmonton broke open a 3-1 game with three late goals in a game that was chalked-full of penalties.

Heading into their third game in three nights, the Cougars started very strongly drawing three straight penalties. The Cougars would capitalize on a five-on-three opportunity halfway through the first when Colin Jacobs tucked home a Chase Witala rebound for his 15th of the season.

After killing off the next two penalties, the Edmonton Oil Kings tied the game when Michael St. Croix found Trevor Cheek on a cross-ice pass. Cheek buried his 20th of the season at the 13:00 minute mark.

Late in the period it was the Cougars turn to get into penalty trouble. A Jordan Tkatch double-minor penalty meant that the Oil Kings would start the second with a lengthy power play.

After killing off nearly three minutes of the power play, the Cougars got a bad break when Curtis Lazar knocked a puck out of the air with a backhand that snuck it’s way through Brett Zarowny. The referees went upstairs to make sure that Lazar’s stick was not above the crossbar, and it was ultimately ruled a ‘good goal.’ That said, the Cougars coaching staff was unhappy as Brett Zarowny appeared to be interfered with on the play.

Penalties continued to dictate the game, as both teams traded penalties throughout the entire frame. Edmonton would increase their lead to 3-1 when Stephane Legault raced in on a shorthanded breakaway and beat Brett Zarowny. Zarowny stopped some of the puck with his blocker, but the puck then careened in off of the shaft of his goal-stick.

After two penalty-filled periods, Edmonton had a 22-16 edge in the shots department.

The Cougars started the third period with a ton of life, and thanks to some extended five-on-five play, they were able to rotate their lines, and put a number of quality chances towards the Edmonton goal. Laurent Brossoit made some key saves to keep his team ahead by two.

After the midway point of the period, Edmonton made it 4-1 when Henrik Samuelsson knocked home a pass from Dylan Wruck at the side of the goal. Edgars Kulda would then add one just under two minutes later to make the score 5-1. Henrik Samuelsson would add one more in the last five minutes to seal the 6-1 victory.

The Cougars (14-26-2-4) finished the game one-for-nine on the power play, while Edmonton went one-for-five. The final shot total had Edmonton ahead 36-21.

Chase Witala and Troy Bourke each extended their point-streaks to four with assists on Colin Jacobs’ goal.

The Cougars now return home to face the Prince Albert Raiders on Wednesday night, marking the only time this season that the Cougars and Raiders will square off.
