Prince George, B.C. – The 26th annual Prince George Iceman competition was staged at several city venues on Sunday.
Five-hundred and-33 people signed up to take part in the multi-event competition for teams and individuals. It all got
underway at the Otway Nordic Ski Centre at 10am with solo and team races covering a total 8 kilometres (2 x 4km laps). That included men’s, ladies and combined (getting psyched for combined, at right) individual races and then the team events. After that a 10 kilometre run from the ski facility to the City Outdoor Ice Oval behind CN Centre, where competitors do a 5 kilometre (12 lap) skate.
The Aquatic Centre is right across 18th Avenue, but you don’t simply walk over there for the swim portion of The Iceman. No, there’s a 2.5 kilometre run through the Pinewood neighbourhood which eventually ends at the pool. The closing event there is an 800 metre swim. All participants must have reached the end of the Iceman course by 3pm.
The kick-off to this year’s Iceman at the Nordic Ski Centre was extremely well-attended, with hundreds of spectators on hand. However the parking availability was very limited and parking was not permitted on Otway Road. Some overflow vehicles had to park in the lot of the next business premises about a quarter mile down the road. It illustrates how parking spots could be at a premium for 2015 Canada Winter Games events at the Otway Ski Centre, especially when you consider the turnout would be multiples of the attendance for the Iceman.

The Iceman event provides a shuttle bus service between the Aquatic Centre and Otway ski hill. This free service operates every 20 minutes from about 8 am until noon on the day of the event. The service is provided for competitors as well as spectators. All the info is on the website every year.

The day was perfect for the Iceman. It appeared to be well run and it was a lot of fun. Thanks organizers!

Norm1 … if you are a member of the organizing group, please make that information available on the site.
I went to read the info on the site. On the page addressing the competitors it states: “SHUTTLE BUS: Available between ski area and pool. 8:40 am to 12:15pm, every 20 minutes Only one Otway parking pass issued per team.”

There is nothing there which states anything about spectators.
In fact, information for those interested in watching any part of the iceman is conspicuously absent.
Next year please provide a map with locations for best viewing by the pulbic, including parking locations.
Thanks.
Actually there was parking on the road, it just had to be west of the turn into the parking lot. The kept everything east clear because the runners would be using that route.
