Power Outage Linked to Computer Crash?

Thursday, March 14, 2013 @ 4:39 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Tuesday night’s power outage in Prince George   has been more than an inconvenience for some Prince George residents as we are hearing the incident may be the cause of numerous computer failures.

250News lost one of its computers through either the surges that happened just before the lights went out, or when the power was restored. ( Yes, we have a surge protector in place) We have learned of at least 4 other cases where the owners say their computers were “fried”.

So, what to do?

B.C. Hydro spokesman Bob Gammer says those who believe the outage and restoration of service is linked to damage to property should contact BC Hydro. “Let them know you want to file a claim and they will assist you through the process.”

The number to call is 1-800-BCHYDRO (1-800-224-9376).

In the meantime, send us an email    here at 250News, so we can keep track of the number of complaints filed.   You can send your note to talk@250news.com

Uh…….uh, kinda hard to send an e-mail or even read this notice when your computer got fried?

Most people have more then one computer; whether it be a smart phone or a tablet or a library card. :)

If you have a surge protector that didn’t do what it was designed to do I don’t see why Hydro would address your damage issue.

You did buy a good surge protector didn’t you? I’m not talking a 20.00 dollar special I’m talking a UPS that is guaranteed to protect or they will pay you X amount of money. Not all surge protectors are the same.

Good luck getting anything out of Hydro!

When I read the headline, I was expecting to see something about the power outage being caused by a hydro computer crash. Otherwise I would have expected the headline to read:

“Computer crash linked to power outage”

Nice to know that our power is linked to computers.
What are you doing Hal? Hal?

It was a weird outage. The power went off for a second then came back on for a second or 2 then went off again. I believe that during that second or two, the lights were brighter than normal telling me the power was a little erratic.

Ya terrible headline, i thought BC Hydros computer caused the outage.

I have to agree, the headline does not make sense.
I would be contacting the maker of my surge protector, not BC Hydro. It is not generally their fault the lower goes out, in our area it is generally caused by weather or accidents.

PGguy1234, it was a weird outage. The weirdest one yet for us was when a truck took down some powerlines near us. When it happened, the phones rang, the microwave beeped and the garage doors started opening. This was in the middle of the night so it completely scared us.

The aspect that struck me as most strange about this event is that Hydro reported that it was a failed insulator at Westwood and Ferry.

How is that we could see the light on the south side of the Nechako, yet every light was off north of the river.

We did not go all the way into town as we thought all the power was lost only on the north side.

This does not add up to me.

There is a 60 kv transmission network around town that supplies power to the varies substations that supply the distribution network. Think a big water main and then small water lines until the water gets to your house.

Anyhow those transmission lines at Westwood and Ferry supply power to a substation on Chief Lake rd. That substation supplies most of the power north of the Nechako. The fault caused a loss of the source of power to the sub, thus the outage.

I didn’t have any trouble with the headline. I also didn’t have any trouble understanding what they were talking about. As for a power surge protector, you mean BC Hydro delivers power to my home any way they want and if they fry all the appliances , well to bad for me, I should have known better and protected myself against their error.
As for Gus, I’m not surprised , if he didn’t write it must be wrong . Gus do you have a degree in everything.

There’s on old saying that comes to mind:

S#!t happens.
