Regional District Finalizes Fee for Foothills

Friday, April 19, 2013 @ 3:43 AM

Prince George. B.C.-  That pick up load of  garbage  destined for the Foothills Landfill will soon  cost you $6 bucks a load.

The Regional District has approved moving forward with the plan to  charge  for small loads, ( weighing less than 100kg).

Those who live in parts of Area A (Salmon River-Lakes) will be exempt from the fee. Further details about the implementation including when it will take  effect  and the  exact   areas of Area A that will be exempt have  yet to be  determined.

This is the dumbest policy they could have come up with.

Making people pay for the privilege to dump will just get people dumping at trail heads and such throughout the city and surrounding areas.

They forget that not everyone makes a 6-figure income. Those that are cheep or on low income are not going to pay to dump. We will all pay for it every time we go to enjoy the outdoors. PG is going to look like parts of Detroit.

My property tax is $2600 a year and they can’t find enough out of the property tax to ensure everyone can dump for free. If every city service is user fee, then why do we still pay property taxes? This is a tax shift-increase of the worst kind as it defeats the purpose of a general fund kind of tax.

Also I used to take a few truck loads from my favorite trail heads to the dump every spring because it was free and it was on my way… now I got to pay for that too. Really dumb policy.

We’ll being seeing a lot of garbage dumped in the Regional Distrct alright all out in the bush.

Just wanted to get my point across ^^

Why only parts of Area A? Are some of us more special then others?

I see an increase in bush dumping and back yard burning coming.

And people wonder why there is so much wildlife in residential areas which have probably been lured in by the disgusting amount of illegal dumping that plagues PG.
A prediction of what is yet to be seen garbage containers in public places filled to capacity and trash bags piled around them because they are so full and with the cuts to parks maintenance they will be there for sometime.Well the city purposed a plan for extra garbge bags to be placed beside waste containers..looks like they about to get their wish but not where they wanted.

The reason that parts of area A will not be charged is there is no other access to garbage dumping, no city pick up, no regional transfer sites.

Isn’t all of Area A outside of city limits? I wonder how they’ll determine who gets the exemption and who doesn’t.

The landfill is a regional district operation which includes area’s not in the city limits.

Wait until you see the pile of garbage that will get dumped by the rivers etc.

We have a perfectly good facility on Quinn St., for solid waste. We paid good, hard earned tax dollars for this facility, and now we are not going to be able to use it.

This whole fiasco, was done by the City (and I suspect Stoltz and the Finance Committee) to save the City some $260,000.00 per year by having the Quinn St., Station run by the Regional District.

As usual a savings for the City, at the end of the day converts into an additional cost to taxpayers. ie; the cost of driving to and from Foothills.

The smart thing to do would have been to reduce the cost of the Quinn St. facility to $3.00 per load, and continue to use this facility. Seems people at City Hall avoid **smart** at any cost.

This is a difficult issue. User fees are probably the fairest way to run a landfill, but there is that segment of the population who thinks it’s a good idea to illegally dump their loads to save six bucks.

The other option is to leave the landfills free and pass the costs of running the facilities to all taxpayers. And we all know how much people love tax increases. You can’t win.

I don’t usually agree with Palopu, but I agree the dumping fee should be reduced to $2 – $3 and the rest of the costs (shortfall) be picked up through general taxes.

We all will pay one way or the other.

So now we need to drive farther AND pay for disposing of garbage. Makes perfect sense!!! That will surely cut down on people dumping and littering in unautherized areas. How on earth did we let these morons get into local government.

Set up a CVSE checkpoint at the entrance to the landfill and start fining people for insecure loads and you could raise a ton of cash. The ditches around the dump are full of garbage that has flown out of vehicles.

There is supposed to be a bylaw requiring that loads be secure but no one seems to be enforcing it.

This is totally stupid. We pay taxes. We should not have to pay extra for every service. Are these the same morons who proposed a tax for snow removal? What’s next a levy for seasonal decorations?

A lot of that garbage alongside Foothills Blvd is from the garbage trucks & commercial trucks – not just private vehicles. I travel Foothills twice a day and see it flying off those commercial vehicles, out from under their tarps and out the back of the unit.
I don’t have a problem with CVSE setting up a checkpoint, as long as they are looking at all of the vehicles.

If memory serves me correct did`nt the Regional District award the new landfill contractor Twin River nearly two hundred thousand more dollars than the previus contractor?? Could this have anything to do with needed tipping
fees?

City Council…what is the next stupid thing we can expect out of this bunch? All we are getting now is garbage. i.e.
– Close down Quinn St. and force people to drive out to Foothills.
(Extra gas used….but don’t forget…we have no idling zones in the city to prevent that. Even Quinn St. Transfer Station was a non-idling zone…ironic isn’t it.)
– The dumb idea of charging $3 per bag for extra garbage was shot down by council, fortunately. Would have created a mess on the streets from crows, dogs and bears getting into it. Not so long ago residents were told to keep their garbage inside until just before pickup so the bears wouldn’t get into it.

– Now, the Regional District is proposing to charge $6 per load to dump a load of garbage. This will result in more dumping along the side roads and as one post mentioned above, who wants to pick up someone else’s garbage and bring it to the dump if it is going to cost them $$?

Yep, Council, you have made some real smart decisions. If you can’t handle the city garbage, how can you be trusted to manage our tax dollars in running the rest of city affairs. Civic Election time can’t come soon enough for me so that we can take care of all this garbage.

Dump your protest on the lawn of city hall! It happened before it can happen again.

This city council is so shortsighted, what a waste of space. Everyone agrees, more garbage will be dumped illegally, the amounts of garbage evident in out of the way places now are astounding, and that’s just from the terminally lazy and stupid people. Add in the people who can’t or won’t pay the 6 bucks, and it becomes a real problem for all of us. This latest show of stupidity ranks right up there with closing the swap sheds.
Fools attempting to make numbers on paper add up in the correct columns.
Shortsighted fools.
metalman.

Now People will use the Forest to Dump, what
a smart Idea and this People got elected ?
