Prince George, B.C. – “Ya, we’ve got about four or five of these (outages) going on simultaneously right now. That thing is causing a lot of problems.”
The “thing” the Prince George firefighter was referring to was the storm system that suddenly moved into north-central BC this morning, causing widespread power outages reaching from Quesnel to the south, all the way to Terrace and Dawson Creek. Now power has not been lost in all areas, but rather select locations.
Here in Prince George six outages were actually reported within the same time frame. The first area hit was on 15th Avenue, between Gorse and Hemlock Streets. A tree that was blown down by heavy winds took out a power line stretching across 15th. The firefighter who 250 News spoke with said the power line was still energized and police and fire crews had been instructed to keep people away from the area. A resident of the house neighbouring the yard where the tree came down was told he would not be able to go back into his house until the power had been shut off by Hydro personnel.
Responding to that situation this reporter noted power, including traffic lights, off from 17th and Victoria Street all the way east to the Fraser River off Fort George Park. As well, emergency dispatchers were swamped with reports of fire and intruder alarms going off. And, while Hydro was responding to the power outages in the area, 250 News proprietor Ben Meisner reported heavy snow and hail coming down in the Hart Highlands.
At this time Hydro has not indicated when power will be restored to all affected areas.
