Its What Makes Us Special

Sometimes it’s the little things that get your attention.
Last week, as I interviewed Brian Pepper of School District 57 , he got into a discussion about the Gladstone School being reopened, and what will likely happen to the old Highglen School.
He talked about how the community had rallied around the students from the school with an out pouring of support. He went into a number of things that the people of the city had done to help the students and parents transition from the old school to the new with as little inconvenience as possible.
He then added that one of the best things about living in Prince George is the people who live here, and how they can rally around an issue such as this to show their support.
He said "That is why Prince George is the best place in Canada to live" . I thanked him for that comment because it struck a real chord with me, he was expressing the very reason why I have stayed in this community for the past 40 years.
We may not be too special in the eyes of people for example in the lower mainland who think we are a bunch of red-necks. There are people from the Okanagan who think we are crazy to be living in this kind of a climate although many of them made their fortunes in this city and region. But those criticisms are in their eyes not ours.
So today, a tip of the hat to Brian Pepper . I too share your thoughts, what a great place to live, and what great people that we have around us. Yes there may be problems now and then but in the end it is the spirit, the guts , if you would have it put that way, that makes this place, a place I am proud to call home.
I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

You know you are from Prince George when…………

You know you are from Prince George when….. You can swat three mosquitoes at the same time without breaking stride.
Having been born and raised in the Prince George area I agree that Prince George is a good place to live (especially in the summer)
However I would never under any circumstances state that Prince George is the best place in Canada to live, if for no other reason than I have not lived in very many other places, and have not visited most places in Canada, and would therefore not be qualified to make such a statement.
I doubt if the rally around the Highglen school in Prince George would be any different under similar situations in other Cities in Canada.
Years ago when the Connaught school on Queensway burnt to the ground the students from that area, and from South Fort George had to be accommodated in the old Baron Bing school. This resulted in kids going to school in shifts. One set of morning shift, and one set of afternoon shift. The afternoon shift students who lived further away were accommodated by bus, or by taxi to get home. Teachers had to accommodate two classes per day.
That too was a good example of people coming together to solve problems.
I agree Ben. It is good to see the community coming together under a bad situation, rather than sitting around and waiting for the government to fix things.
We need more of this kind of attitude today.
Despite the worst air quality two years in a row and the crappiest roads and the most inept municipal government yet, I wouldn’t live anywhere else. Besides, we don’t need a helicopter telling us which way to go home.
Good point Palopu about not saying your city is the best place to live. How can anyone say that when they haven’t lived everywhere else.
The only thing I don’t like about PG is that is it so far to drive to other communities e.g. Kamloops, Kelowna, Salmon Arm, etc. and I am not quite rich enough to fly each time. Other than that, and I have travelled around BC and other parts of the world, it is a friendly, not-too-big community.
My favourite things about PG are the winters – I love snow – and that I can travel just a few minutes around and out of the city to find a spot to hike, bike, run, ski, etc. without running into other people.
I have traveled many places all over the world. I have lived in major big cities.PG might not be the prettiest place on the planet but the people are first class. Prince George IS a real community. The roads aren’t perfect. The snow seems to often seem never ending but the warm and kindness of the majority of the people is like no other place.
To many the grass always looks greener on the other side. Trust me, it isn’t.
PG is a very good community for sure. The best place to live n Canada? Honestly, that’s impossible to quantify. There are far too many variables to take into account and the significance of those variables will be different for different people at different points of their life.
At the end of the day, all you can really do is take an honest evaluation of your current situation and decide whether or not the place you live is where you want to be. If it is, that’s great. If it isn’t, there are literally hundreds or thousands of other cities across Canada that you could live in, almost all of which would be called “the best place to live” for many people who choose to reside there.
Figure out what you want, what you value and try to get to a place that has that. Simple ;)
Ask yourself this… if you won the lottery and could live anywhere in Canada, would you pick PG?
Yeah, I didn’t think so either.
JB How you going to drive the Porsche on these roads in the summer. Cost a fortune just to get the bugs off everyday let alone the undercarriage
