Prince George, B.C. – RCMP ground and air personnel have joined Prince George Search and Rescue teams in the search for an elderly woman who fell into the Willow River early this afternoon.

Prince George RCMP Sergeant Al Steinhauser says around 12:30pm the 60-year-old woman and her male companion were walking her dogs along the top of a canyon, 30 kilometres east of Prince George where the Willow River goes beneath Highway 16. The woman reportedly got too close to the edge and slipped down into the river.

Fifteen Search and Rescue members are currently looking for the woman upstream, and police officers, an RCMP plane as well as a helicopter are conducting searches both up and downstream from where the woman went into the water. The hope is she managed to make it to shore.

However, one official says the water is running too fast to allow search personnel to get near the edge of the river.  Jeff Smedley with Prince George SAR estimates the water is running at about 10 miles per hour.  He could not estimate the water temperature, but at this time of year, with spring run-off well underway, it would of course be very cold.

upstream??

Elderly? 60 is elderly?

Hope this turns out well.

Unfortunately that section of the Willow River is extremely dangerous.

In terms of search and rescue 60 would be considered elderly based on the assumed overall physical condition of the person. It gives the rescue teams some timeline numbers and probabilitys to work with. It’s not meant to be an insult but more of a reporting and planning procedure. If someone who was in thier twenty’s for example was in this situation it could buy a bit more time but in this case based the fact the person is older time will be the deciding life or death factor and resources can be deployed accordingly .
